Truecaller has announced that its Daily Active User base has grown to 100 million. This marks a staggering progress from the 100 million active monthly users from last year. Truecaller was first launched in 2009 and it has shaped up as one of the most widely downloaded mobile application across all platforms.
In the recent past, the service has evolved from a caller ID and spam-blocking service to a platform that offers features like calling, messaging, payment services and a scanner feature as well. The app has tasted great success in emerging markets like India and has been at the forefront when it comes to tackling the spam calls.
“In emerging markets, we’re seeing the importance of smartphones in peoples’ daily lives. It’s their primary gateway to the internet, their connection with family and friends, people abroad, and increasingly their main banking and finance tool. Smartphones and Truecaller have become indispensable in the lives of our 100 million daily users.”
According to Truecaller, the app has also become a resource for women safety in many countries and is also being used for e-commerce needs and courier services. The company also mentions how Truecaller has helped bring more African businesses onboard the digital payment bandwagon.
Truecaller works by uploading all the contact information on your phone to a server and then when someone searches for the number it fetches the contact detail from the server. The app users data downloaded by millions of users worldwide and the same is used for flagging spam calls or identifying callers. Truecaller had been in midst of a controversy after it was hacked by a group named Syrian electronic army. That being said we also need to consider the fact that all famous services (including iCloud) are vulnerable in one way of the other.
