Oppo has been in the limelight for its completely bezel-less Find X smartphone with slide out cameras and a design that stands out from the typical 2018 notched smartphones. But, it doesn’t look like the Find X was Oppo’s only attempt to do something different. We recently featured Oppo’s take on the bezel-less future where they said they’re trying out multiple options for a smartphone with as fewer borders surrounding the screen as possible, and recent leaks hint towards another attempt by Oppo. They’re going for a different take on the infamous notch that smartphone manufacturers have come to love, and consumers, the exact converse.
Instead of a conventionally large rectangular or trapezoidal cutout for the notch, recent teasers of the Oppo F9 and F9 Pro from Oppo’s own tweets from its Malaysian and Indian accounts showcase a design with a notch that’s narrower than usual, something like the one on the Essential PH-1, which houses just the front-facing camera with rest of the sensors and the earpiece hidden. Talking about the front facing camera, Oppo’s F series of smartphones are usually focused on their selfie-taking abilities, as seen on the F3, F5 and F7 previously.
The image of the F9 posted on Twitter was accompanied by the words “waterdrop screen” which doesn’t seem to make any sense except for a possibility that Oppo is hinting towards the notch being in the shape of a water droplet, or since the teaser image shows a waterfall, it can also imply that the F9 may carry some sort of water resistance. The screen to body ratio of the smartphone is said to be 90.8%.
While we’re not aware of any further details about the F9 and F9 pro smartphones, earlier leaks had suggested similarities in network modems used on the Realme 1 with the one being used on the F9 and F9 pro which can mean that the Helio P60 SoC might be found under the hood on these two smartphones. The launch is slated to take place in August according to some speculations.
