The second-generation of Reliance Jio’s wildly popular feature phone series, the JioPhone 2 finally has an availability date. The phone will go on a flash sale starting from August 16th at 12 PM for a sum of Rs 2,999. The JioPhone 2, for starters, will be only available on the company’s own website, Jio.com.
As promised, there’s also an exchange offer which lets you swap any existing feature phone for a discount. JioPhone 2’s biggest highlight is the QWERTY keyboard and wider 2.4-inch display, ideal for texting on apps like WhatsApp. Speaking of which, at launch, only Facebook and YouTube will be available on the JioPhone 2. WhatsApp will arrive in a later update.
The JioPhone 2 is also compatible with two SIM cards, unlike the first-generation model which was carrier locked exclusively to Jio. It has 4GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB through a MicroSD card slot, 512MB of RAM, and a 2000mAh battery. As for the cameras, the JioPhone 2 comes with a 2-megapixel sensor on the rear and a VGA lens selfie snapper.
Like its predecessor, the JioPhone 2 too runs on KaiOS, a smarter operating designed for feature phones. It comes bundled with Reliance Jio’s entertainment suite of apps such as JioMovies, JioTV, JioMusic, and more. In addition, the JioPhone 2 has a host of connectivity options including NFC, Bluetooth, VoLTE, and even VoWiFi. There’s also a dedicated hardware key for summoning the Google Assistant which can be employed for playing videos on YouTube, checking in on Facebook, firing up a chat with someone on WhatsApp, and more.
