However, not everyone is good with DIY or electronics, so they sometimes have to look for specialized technicians to get the job done. If you are willing to take the time and learn a few tricks that will help you around the house, then your mobile device might be the best teacher.

There are lots of apps that can help you improve your home, and they range from DIY apps to home automation, shopping and everything in between. These apps are designed to make your everyday life easier by providing you with the necessary information that you need to improve your home. Today, we’ll give you a few examples of such apps.

What can a home improvement app do for you?

Well, for starters, an app is a easy and simple way to obtain information about pretty much any household item, as well as means of searching and buying certain items online, thus saving you time and effort. Think of them as virtual toolboxes.

There are a few types of apps that will help you around the house, so, depending on what you need, you will have a few to choose from. We previously talked about some apps that you can use, and we will remind you of them if you’ve missed those posts. There are a number of apps that will help you around the house. We’ll provide you with some of the best ones from each category, so you will have a good idea of what you can use.

Automation Apps

If you don’t remember, we talked a while back about how to control home electronics, and a part of that was by using automation systems that allow you to control certain appliances and other electronics from your mobile device via dedicated apps. These are probably the best ways for someone to use apps to improve their house. Also, remember that some smart thermostats also allow remote control via apps on your smartphone, so you can use your mobile device as a universal remote.

If you want to see a few ways in which you can automate some of your household appliances, then be sure to check out our tutorial on controlling home electronics, where you can see both automation apps as well as some solutions for DIY.

DIY Apps

Many like to make things with own two hands, and when something gets broken, fixing, rather than replacing is the prefered way. For those who are into DIY, there are a lot of apps available on pretty much any mobile platform, as well as lots of websites where users can find lots of projects and information. These range from simple fixes or creating home furniture and other household items to electronics and complex projects that can help your home. All this information is literally available in the palm of your hand.

Design Apps

If you have downloaded your prefered DIY app and you learned how to make bedroom furniture or other items, you might want to look at some interior and exterior design apps. While these apps are not as useful as the others, they provide you with lots of ideas of what you can do with your own home. There are some very well known design apps that have made many users happy and they have helped these people create their dream homes. If you want your home to be tailor made for you, then you need to some research, and by using a design app, you will be able to do it.

Shopping Apps

The lazy man’s best friend is a app that allows him to do his shopping from home, without the need of going from store to store in search of a lamp or the perfect table. The best thing about online shopping is that you save a lot of time and you can visit different stores and compare prices on different items. Thanks to the fact that many online stores offer mobile apps for their customers, it’s easy to download them and start browsing the virtual shelves for the very best items.

What’s the formula for success? Clearly, Samsung knows a thing or two about this, having followed a similar strategy for its Galaxy S, S2 and S III smartphones – each model a bigger success than its predecessor. And with its latest flagship, the Galaxy S4, the Korean manufacturer hasn’t broken the mold, and is attempting to follow the same tried and tested route to the top. Each and every aspect of the S III has been beefed up – from the hardware to the software, to come up with a device that’s so loaded that a hard copy of its spec and features sheet probably weigh much more than the handset itself. And then of course, there’s the matter of its plastic construction and how it compares to its nemesis, the HTC One, widely touted as the best Android phone there is. Bear with us, as we attempt to decode the S4′s DNA and present it to you stripped of its hype, just so you can figure out whether this is a galaxy you want to explore or not.

Design and hardware

Yes, it’s made of plastic. No, it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy. Yes, the HTC One feels much, much more premium. No, that probably won’t be a deal breaker for most. The best part about the Galaxy S4′s design has to be how Samsung has managed to squeeze in a larger screen compared to the S III in a body that’s physically smaller, thinner and lighter. Toting a design that’s not drastically different, it’s a smooth slab with rounded corners.

The best part about the Galaxy S4′s design has to be how Samsung has managed to squeeze in a larger screen compared to the S III in a body that’s physically smaller, thinner and lighter

There’s a 5-inch screen in front along with a dark, thin border, a rounded home button at the bottom with a chrome lining and flanked by two capacitive touch keys, while the top is home to the phone earpiece, sensors, a notification LED and the front-facing camera. A chrome band encircles the spine on all four sides and ups the ante in terms of its premium feel. The metallic power / sleep key is on the right, the volume rocker on the left, microUSB cum MHL port at the bottom along with the microphone, while the 3.5mm headset socket can be found on top next to the secondary microphone and an infrared blaster. Flip the phone over and you’re greeted by a textured pattern that’s smooth to the touch and a bit of a fingerprint magnet. Our review unit came in black, but there’s a white option available as well.

The 13-megapixel snapper and an LED flash are placed close to the top, with a Samsung logo in the middle and a speaker close to the bottom. As we mentioned earlier, the device doesn’t compare in build to the HTC One’s aluminum unibody construction, and while we aren’t sure how Samsung’s new flagship will take hard falls, at least it doesn’t feel cheap and is lighter to boot.

The Galaxy S III has a 720p screen, so it’s only apt that the S4 gets a bigger, better screen. With its full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel screen, the S4 joins the elite club that currently has the likes of the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and the HTC Butterfly as its members. The Super AMOLED display on the S4 boasts a pixel density of 441 ppi and is a treat for the eyes. It’s hard to find fault with it, since it works well in all aspects – from the colors to viewing angles. Sunlight legibility isn’t bad either. The text is crisp, the icons float, the images pop out and the videos look alive.

Apart from the usual auto brightness feature that adjusts screen brightness as per ambient light, there are quite a few other tweaks available that let you customize the S4′s display. Like the S III, there’s an option to switch the display between dynamic, standard, photo and movie modes depending upon your preferences and usage. A new option called “adapt display” has also been added, tuning the display automatically. This aside, there’s also an option to increase touch sensitivity for use with gloved hands – useful for those residing in or traveling to chilly climes. It’s a superb screen, and will not disappoint you whatever your usage might be.

While a 2-megapixel snapper handles video calling at the front, the Galaxy S4 has been armed with a 13-megapixel main camera. After loading it up with megapixels, Samsung went ahead and crammed every software feature it could find, ending up with quite a few gimmicks in the process as well. Not too long ago, there was a time when we used to talk about features like HDR and panorama, and wax lyrical about smartphones cameras that sported them. The S4′s shooter has all of this, and so much more. Par for the course, there’s control over ISO, white balance, exposure, and metering. You can set the volume key to control digital zoom or to capture stills or video.

The S4′s snapper is much more versatile and serves up good results in almost all other scenarios. The frills and the gimmicks are bonus.

Just like the LG Optimus G, the shutter can be triggered using voice commands. There’s an editable quick menu so you can place shortcuts to your favorite settings right upfront. The camera UI allows you to capture stills and videos from the same screen, and tapping on an arrow below throws up the available filters and effects, each with live previews. Tap on the “Mode” key, and you’re presented with the range of shooting modes on offer. This is where you can select the usual ones such as panorama, HDR, night, sports, beauty face etc, but there are also a few others. “Eraser” and “Drama” are two features we’ve seen previously on the HTC One, with the former capturing a series of images and erasing undesired elements such as bystanders from a photo, and the latter combining a series to stitch them into a sequence action shot. There’s also a “Sound & shot” mode that lets you capture a short audio clip with a still, and “Animated photo” that enables animating a part of an image to create a .GIF.

Next, a Dual Shot feature combines images from both the front and the rear cameras to capture a single shot that gets you into the action while shooting, so to speak. How’s the quality, you ask? In one word, outstanding. Pristine images, detailed and accurate colors, and sharp, crisp results are yours for the taking. The camera excels in all sorts of shooting conditions, especially those with good lighting, both indoors and outdoors. It’s quite usable in low light as well, though the HTC One takes the cake there. However, the S4′s snapper is much more versatile and serves up good results in almost all other scenarios. The frills and the gimmicks are bonus.

Software

Where there’s a Samsung Galaxy, there’s TouchWiz, the manufacturer’s custom skin that drapes over Android. And this time, the Android offering is the latest version of Mountain View’s world-beating mobile OS, version 4.2.2.

Sammy has made sure that the software features and content offerings are so loaded that no other rival can even think about coming close

While this version brings its own pluses to the table including lock screen widgets, Sammy has made sure that the software features and content offerings are so loaded that no other rival can even think about coming close. As one would expect, the goodies we’ve seen earlier are all there, from Samsung’s own apps covering the likes of ChatOn, S Voice, S Planner and S Memo, right along with the Samsung Apps storefront.

Features we’ve see earlier such as Multi window and Smart Stay are also present. Text input is handled by the Samsung Keyboard, which offers a dedicated row of numbers on the top. It also features text prediction, auto correct, and swipe-based text input. The only problem with it is that it feels a tad cramped, but in case you don’t get friendly with it after a while, you can always opt for one of the third-party options such as the excellent SwiftKey off the Play Store.

There’s a new app called WatchOn which is powered by Peel and works hand-in-glove with the IR blaster located on the top. This is another feature we’ve seen in the HTC One and lets you use your device as a universal remote to control your TV and DVR, apart from presenting a program guide. The one-time setup process on the S4 is fairly straightforward, and while India isn’t mentioned in the list of countries, we were able to control our LG TV and Tata Sky set-top box after a bit of hit and trial, and choosing UK as our location and Sky+ as the provider. Most functions of the Tata Sky + box are supported, including the onscreen guide as well as recording and playback functions, and while it isn’t really a must-have feature, it’s certainly a useful one.

Then there’s Story Album that lets you create photo albums using your camera images, and Group Play, a feature that lets you share music, pictures and documents, and also play multiplayer games with other S4 devices. S Health is another new addition, and is a full-fledged fitness app that lets you monitor your health and keep track of workouts, steps taken, calorie intake etc. Samsung Hub acts as the main content hub and integrates books, games, videos and learning material that includes educational titles, TED Talks and sample question papers. Make no mistake, there’s a lot on offer here, and we aren’t finished yet.

While there’s the question of how many of these features are actually useful and will be used regularly over the long term, there’s no denying that these work in the device’s favor to differentiate from the pack

Taking a cue from features such as Air View that worked using the S Pen on the Note II, along with the Smart Stay concept that uses the front camera to detect your eyes on the screen and keeps the screen awake, Samsung has crammed the S4 with a slew of gestures and tricks that let you control the device without even touching it. Air View now works using just your finger, and displays previews of emails or contact details just by hovering your finger over the screen. Swiping your hand above the screen while the device is on standby can awaken it to display notifications, and you can even use the same action to accept incoming calls or scroll through images in the gallery or long web pages – all without actually touching the screen.

Then there are others, such as Smart Pause that pauses a video automatically when you look away, and continues playback when you turn your face back towards the screen. Similarly, Smart Scroll lets you scroll web pages just by tilting your head. It’s an overwhelming package, and in our testing, we had mixed success in getting many of these to work. While there’s the question of how many of these features are actually useful and will be used regularly by S4 owners over the long term, there’s no denying that these work in the device’s favor to differentiate and make it stand out from the rest of the pack.

Rating: 8.5/10

Performance and battery life

With an Exynos 5 Octa 5410 processor under the hood, mated to 2GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU, the Galaxy S4′s core specs are top notch. The Octa-core processor is slightly misleading in the sense that while it does have eight cores, only four are in operation at a time. The chipset combines 1.6GHz Cortex-A15 quad-core and 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 quad-core silicon, and the speedier cores only kick in for tasks that require their prowess, switching the A7 cores off in the process. Similar to Tegra 3′s 4-PLUS-1 structure, this is a battery saving feature.

The 2,600 mAh pack here keeps the phone alive for a full working day with medium usage. A little more however, and you may need a top-up charge during the day.

As far as pure performance is concerned, this is Samsung’s new age flagship we’re talking about here, and as such, there are absolutely no speed bumps anywhere. This smartphone flies and zips through everything that’s thrown at it, and the going is butter smooth. There’s only a little over 8GB of available storage accessible by the user out of the built-in 16GB, and while that’s a bit of a disappointment, at least you can add more via the microSD slot.

In terms of connectivity, there’s the whole gamut – from Wi-Fi 802.11 ac to MHL 2.0, NFC, DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct – no quibbles here. Unlike most of its closest rivals, the Galaxy S4 offers a removable battery, and the 2,600 mAh pack here keeps the phone alive for a full working day with medium usage. A little more however, and you may need a top-up charge during the day, especially if you’re working late or have a late evening do to attend.

Rating: 9/10

Video Review

Conclusion

Too much of a good thing can be a problem, and Samsung’s attempt to cram the S4 with so many features could have a negative side as well. It even defies the 80:20 rule, which we think, holds true for smartphones too.

It’s a bit like an all-you-can-eat buffet by the end of which you feel stuffed, but not really satiated.

With the ubiquitous smartphone handling so much of our tasks, from communications to media, social networking to personal organization, navigation to shooting, very few of the conventional users actually use all of a device’s capabilities, especially a powerful, flagship one. And considering the S4′s capabilities, how many of these are actually useful on a day-to-day basis, assuming they all work as advertised? We reckon it’s a bit like an all-you-can-eat buffet by the end of which you feel stuffed, but not really satiated.

Truth be told, these gripes could very well be the rants of those like us who follow this space closely, and may not mean much to the average user. The Galaxy S4 is an overwhelming, powerful device that will not disappoint, unless you really hate plastic devices and prefer metal. Priced at Rs 41,500 (~ $760), it certainly doesn’t come cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One – What to buy?

As diplomatic as it may sound, there’s little doubt that both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are both extremely capable in their own right, but if you’re having trouble trying to figure out where to lay your hard-earned dosh, check out both of them and get a first-hand feel before you buy. The HTC One is certainly the one to own if you’re a fan of great build quality, and value a snapper that’ll deliver amazing shots in low light – a scenario where most of us end up clicking pictures regularly anyway. Think parties, dinners, et al.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S4′s beauty lies in it being a device loaded with a ton of features, some of which are fun, some handy, some amazing, and some gimmicky, along with that all-rounder of a camera. Being the evolution it is, the S4 may not be a totally unexplored galaxy that promises exciting adventures, but it can certainly boast a maze of features for keeping you occupied. Or lost. Or at least help you shout, “look ma, no hands!”, if nothing else. Depends on you, really.

Overall Rating: 9/10

While on the outside, it was just a normal Galaxy S4, we quickly learned that it was running on a stock Android OS, without the TouchWiz that other Galaxy S4s come with or other modifications. What’s even more interesting is that this is an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S4 that also comes with an unlocked bootloader.

Turning the Galaxy S4 into a Nexus

The Samsung Galaxy S4 presented on the Google I/O stage will be available for users to buy from the Google Store for the price of $649. It will be available starting June 26th and it will be unlike any other Galaxy S4 you’ve seen so far:

Completely Unlocked – Just like any other Nexus device, this Galaxy S4 will come unlocked, so users will be able to run it on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE networks.

Unlocked Bootloader – Those who like to install custom ROMs will not have to worry about unlocking the bootloader on this “Nexus Galaxy S4″, as it will come unlocked straight from the box.

Prompt OTA Updates - Just like any other Nexus device, this Galaxy S4 will be first in line for updates comming from Google.

16GB of memory – Unlike the regular Galaxy S4, which has 32 and 64GB versions, on this device there will be only 16GB and there is no word about a microSD card slot.

Not much is known about the specs of the device, and we believe that it will be just like the regular Galaxy S4. Apart from this, not much information was released, so we can only say that this device will bring the “Nexus Experience” to the Galaxy S4. We hope that we’ll see a new Android version coming with it also.

Just a few moments ago, during Google’s I/O conference, some new capabilities for the Play Store have been announced. One of the most interesting of all is for gaming, and it aims at allowing users to play their favorite games across multiple platforms and with their Google + friends. The service, called Google Play Game will start rolling out today, so in no time, we will see games come out that are capable of Google+ multiplayer and much more.

Google Play Game Services – Ready for Developers

Google Play Game will provide users with a number of features aimed at making Android gaming more attractive. Many users will be thrilled by the possibility of cross-platform gaming, but that is not all, here are the top features that Google Play Game Services will bring:

Real-Time Multiplayer via Google + – Gamers will be able to invite their Google + friends to play multiplayer games from within the game itself. This feature will be available for all Android users, but unlike the other features, it will not be cross-platform.

Achievements and Leaderboards – If your friends are playing the same games, then you will be able to compare achievements and scores via the leaderboards. This service will be available as cross-platform service, so not matter if you are an Android or an iOS user, you will still be able to compare scores with others.

Cloud Save – Most users own several gadgets, such as smartphones and tablets, and for serious gamers the possibility of syncing progress from a game across multiple devices would be awesome. Today, at Google I/O, this possibility became reality, as Cloud Save will enable gamers to save their progress on one device and pick up where they left off from another device.

These features will be available starting today, but keep in mind that Google Play Game Services is not a stand-alone app, but rather a feature available for developers to implement in their games. This means that not all games will support these features, but rather those who are built with multiplayer in mind. As Google product manager Greg Hartrell said:

We won’t make it a mandatory exercise, or have any certification process around it

Nevertheless, serious developers will probably add these features to all the well known games that are out there now, for Android, iOS or WEB interfaces.

With the implementation of these APIs, Google is trying to unite the mobile gaming world and allow users of all Android devices (from Android 2.2 Froyo and above), using both smartphones or tablets as well as iOS users, to enjoy their favorite games. The concept is great, and if you ask us, long overdue.

Summer is almost upon us and our smartphones and tablets are always with us. We’re always looking for new, interesting Android applications to have fun with. And here, at Technology Personalized, we take this very seriously as every week comes to an end. To remind you all once again, we’re not only talking about new Android apps, we carefully look at the ratings and we also check them out ourselves.

Half of the apps presented here are games, so you’ll have enough to relax yourself at work or while waiting for the subway. If you’re looking for some new apps for your iPhone or iPad, I suggest you to check out our weekly list of iOS apps, as well.

Carmageddon

Oh boy, oh boy, it has finally come to Android devices! Without a doubt, this game will not appeal to those that haven’t played it before. But the great number of downloads and ratings will increase in time thanks to those that have played this game when it first appeared, in the late ’90s. Unleash a motor mayhem in Carmageddon as you destroy the cars of your opponents, police and you don’t even mind stepping over pedestrians and even cows.

Focus@will

Now, this is one application that I badly need. Focus@will is an inventive, new kind of music service that is actually helping you out while you are studying or working. It’s a music service that gathers radio stations according to your preference: classical, jazz, ambient or “alpha chill”. It is said to increase the attention span up to 400%, probably because it is based on neuroscience. However, you’ll have to pay more to enjoy the most of it. After a 3 week trial with full access, you can choose to subscribe for $3.99 per month/$34.99 per year or choose the free version, where you will be limited to 100 minutes per session.

Tetris Blitz

Tetris is the first game I played in my life and it wasn’t on a smartphone, computer and not even on a “modern” gaming console. I played Tetris on something like this, that was called Brick Game. There are a lot of Tetris apps on the Play Store for your Android device, but not all of them are created by such a reputed company as Electronic Arts. Tetris Blitz is a 2-minute version of the game, but you can also try a free version of the full game or opt for the paid one.

Shiny The Firefly

Games with superb animation have always been appreciated by players all over the world, regardless of their age. Such is the case with Shiny the Firefly, which you are helping to find hist lost babies. As you do it, you will have to battle against an army of mosquitoes, toads, plants, wasps and many other dangerous insects trying to stop you from your holy mission. 33 levels are there to challenge you, but as the game will become more popular, you should expect new levels in a future update.

Schemes

It’s kind of weird that our social lives are now more and more in the online environment. Somehow, we don’t have as much time as we once did and rather to call, message or meet, some of us prefer to send a message on Facebook or just to tweet. Schemes tries to ease your online social life by letting you schedule certain messages. You can use Schemes to schedule message sending to Facebook, Twitter and even as SMS. The app is currently in BETA, so be patient with any possible glitches.

Flayvr

If your smartphone comes with an impressive camera that you rely on more than you do on your digital camera, then chances are that you’ve piled up quite a lot of photos and videos. And one of the biggest issue is to sort them afterwards. Flayvr helps with that, by recognizing photos and videos that you took at a certain event and grouping them all together. You can then easily share them if your friends, if you want to.

Splay Launcher

Albeit we’ve talked about some of the best Android launchers just recently, Splay launcher has caught our attention with its rather unorthodox way of customizing your homescreen.

Splay allows you to easily operate with just a single hand to access your phone, messages, music, apps and even more. It looks so different that your friends might think you’re holding in your hands a different OS than Android!

Captain Oil

The last but one game in our weekly list of the best Android apps is Captain Oil where you have to free the trapped Oileys. You have 90 super levels where you must play around with the physics laws in order to find the perfect shooting angle. You are, of course, Captain Oil and you must free all the Oileys to get back your precious workers.

Origami Live Wallpaper

One of the things that I love to do the most when it comes to customizing my Android experience is to play around with live wallpapers and backgrounds. I don’t know why, but I get bored if I don’t change them after maximum 3 days. That’s why when I discovered Origami Live Wallpaper I was excited. The wallpaper itself is very basic, as it has only 9 different themes, but there are up to 62 customization options to get what you’re looking for. Get a look at the video to understand what I’m talking about.

Tennis in the Face

Quite a weird name, indeed, but it speaks for the action that happens inside the game. You must help Pete Pagassi [sic] fight foes from the Explodz evil energy drink corporation: creepy clowns, evil riot police and other Explodz-addicted maniacs. And how do you do that? Well, that’s right, with a tennis ball in the face!

All mobile users know that with the “stock” feel of any operating system you don’t have many customization options and you have to be content only with basic home screens arrangements and original app drawers. In the aid of so many frustrated people, developers have created third-party options known as launchers.

Android launchers represent complex applications capable of customizing phones like no others. It is probably the most powerful feature that somebody can have on Android. Basically, a launcher can change the look and functionality of the home screen and app drawer, allowing owners to install themes and change icons to their liking.

Customize your Android with these awesome launchers

Besides all of these, some of the best Android launchers enable the possibility of adding other docks at the bottom, to change the number of home screens, to sort apps and scroll in different ways through the drawer and so on. Another strong motive of applying a third-party launcher is to get away from company-specific titles, which replace the basic, clean look of Android with plenty useless stuff. In this category we dare to remember Sense UI from HTC, Blur from Motorola and TouchWiz from Samsung.

What about the costs? It can be tough for old phones to work with some launchers, because the application can absorb many resources making the phone sluggish. After trying more than a dozen, we can safely say it all depends on the phone capabilities and the launcher you will use. That’s why we compelled today a comprehensive but short list of those we deemed the best.

Nova Launcher

Nova is one of the most popular launchers on Android 4.0 and above. Practically it’s a home screen replacement, highly customizable and performance driven app, which has great rating on Google Play Store and was also chosen as the most used on our Facebook poll. Unfortunately, it’s not available for Gingerbread.

Nova Launcher can single-handedly customize Android devices very easy, letting the user to change almost everything on his phone, starting with the casual home screen and app drawer to adding different animations and transitions. To make the entire experience even better you can select the animation options and scrolling speed from the Nova Settings menu.

It is very simple to customize the app drawer and you have a bunch of different options with which you can play. Nova is able to change drawer style (vertical continuous scrolling or horizontal pages), scrolling effects and create groups of icons.

Nova Launcher’s main features:

Custom Grid

Infinite Scroll

Scroll Effects

Folder Icons

Gestures (only for the paid version)

Drawer Groups (only for the paid version)

Icon Swipes (only for the paid version)

Another interesting detail is the Icon Swipes feature. To explain this, let’s say that you have two different messaging applications that you usually use: the default Messaging app and WhatsApp. It would be more efficiently to have a single icon for the two of them, but how?

With Nova, you can easily toggle between the two apps because every dock icon can have dual actions. Just enter per-icon swipe gestures and choose the default program that will be activated when you tap the icon and the second program that will be open only when you will swipe over the icon. In addition, developers are looking forward to hearing suggestions for other features on their official site.

Now, one of the most voted requests is the implementation of a new home screen for every particular action you do (such as connecting your earphones to the phone or connecting to a certain Wi-Fi). The application is available for free but also comes with a version. The last one, Nova Launcher Prime, costs $4 and unlocks a wide range of extra features that make the whole experience more interesting.

Holo Launcher

Holo Launcher is a home screen replacement for Android devices with a decent amount of features that is very fast and simple to use. Available even for Froyo and Gingerbread users, the main advantage of this launcher is the ability of bringing the Ice Cream Sandwich interface on older phones. As for features, here’s what you may expect of it:

Full ICS Style: Icons, Folders, Outlines, Drawer Tabs

Custom Drawer and Desktop (up to 9 desktop pages)

Infinite Scrolling

Backup and Restore settings

Gestures: Swipe up/down on the desktop (more gestures are available for the paid version)

Widgets overlapping (only for the paid version)

Multiple configurable drawer tabs (paid version)

Even though Holo is not the most customizable launcher, it has its advantages too. Its various options and settings allow you to change the number of home screens (up to 9), the general look, transitions, the size of the widgets and so forth. Furthermore, it will change the look of the plain Google search widget into a transparent model, usually found on higher-end devices.

Generally, Holo is a quick and easy to set launcher. After the installation, two new icons will appear on the home screen, the settings of the launcher and the Holo locker. Unfortunately, the locker and the notifier are not built-in the launcher and it’s necessary to download and install them separately. Even though they are not included, they work really well after installation.

The launcher uses around 20 MB of RAM so the whole experience runs pretty smooth and without bugs or other problems. Unfortunately, from latest updates a lot of users are complaining that the launcher is laggy on their devices, but I think this problem depends from device to device.

The paid version, Holo Launcher Plus, costs $3.89 and unfortunately it has very little exclusive features.

Apex Launcher

Apex Launcher is a super-customizable launcher and home replacement for Android 4.0 and above. If you are searching for an application that is not only able to adjust the look and the feel of your device, but you want more, like tweaking your phone to almost imaginable, this is the perfect launcher for you. The main features of the software are:

Customizable home screens, app and folder icons

Infinite and elastic scrolling

Many transitions effects

Multiple drawer styles

Dock swipe gestures and two finger gesture (only for the paid version)

Widgets in dock (1×1 dimension and it is available only for the paid version)

Option to merge folder contents (paid version)

In terms of performance, Apex shines. The application has the best mix of features, stability and speed and does everything you can imagine. The installation is very simple and changing settings is too, but if you really want to tweak it to your personal taste, you will have to get more under the hood.

When users upgrade to the pro and paid version to get those nice features presented above, the greatest is the one that offers theme support from almost all the other major launchers. So, it allows the user to choose from a big library with hundreds of free or paid themes from different developers, such as Go EX, ADW and others.

The biggest disappointment of Apex is that it is only available for Ice Cream Sandwich users and above. Unfortunately, users that are still running on older Androids and cannot get a new phone with ICS are deprived of the chance.

Apex Launcher is one of the most utilized applications of its type and comes at Google Play Store in two versions: free and paid. The amazing fact of the free one is that it has so many available features that you may think it is a paid one. Anyway, if you want the Pro version, you need to know that costs $3.99.

Go Launcher Ex

Go Launcher Ex is made by the GO Dev Team which has lots and lots of different applications for Android. It’s one of the pioneers of home screen replacements that are still on the market. Theoretically, Go Launcher can customize and personalize your phone using hundreds of free or paid themes available on the Google Play Store. Besides themes, the launcher comes with a tons of great features, but we will remind only the most important:

Install and use various GO widgets (weather, switcher, calendar)

Many available transitions

Amazing custom gestures

More than 5000 themes

A special application for management

Change size of the icons

Edit the background

Now, on the market are two types of launchers: those that are trying to provide a default look (which imitate the interface of ICS or Windows Mobile) and those that are more traditional and give the user total control. Go Launcher Ex is in the second category because it provides tools and settings to tweak anything you can imagine.

Basically, it can change anything from the number of icons, icon labels, gestures, transition effects to icon size and much more. The app drawer is very customizable and you can even create folders to organize it as much as a home screen.

Besides the large number of themes, the program is capable of combining icons from one theme to another which is really great because it lets you apply extreme customization to your phone. Also, it has the ability to rename an icon to nothing, to create transparent or invisible icons and to add a direct contact on the home screen, allowing people to call other with only one tap.

All in all, Go Launcher Ex is maybe the best free launcher you can find on Google Play. It might not have so many transitions, effects or animations, but it is more functionality than others and it is available even for the Froyo users.

Everything.me

Everything.me is the most dynamic Android launcher available on the market. At the moment, the launcher is still in an early beta phase but it can be downloaded and tried those that have an Android 4.0 or above device and are located in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom.

Practically, it is an intelligent launcher that will change the background of your device depending on what are you searching or doing. Everything.me seems to be alive by dynamically changing settings to improve experience. The entire process is quite simple: just type or say what are you searching for and the launcher will reveal relevant apps. Moreover, it will automatically populate these applications with your search, so if you click on the browser it will show results directly.

A regular phone is somewhat limited to a range of installed applications and other stuff like that, but through Everything.me the phone starts to react dynamically. When you search something and the launcher creates that group of relevant apps we were talking above, it will also show titles that are not currently installed on the handset. The best part is that all of these results may be accessed and used without having to download the package – in a matter similar to Firefox OS.

Smart Folders is another interesting feature, which acts like an auto sorting machine. By selecting a category, such as gaming or social, all relevant applications will be automatically shown, whether they are installed or not. This way, users have the possibility of exploring and breaking their current limitations.

Everything.me is also available in the new Firefox operating system. Thanks to the partnership between the two companies, the application is integrated in the new OS. To activate it, just swipe to the left from Firefox’s home screen and you will enter in a world of HTML 5 mobile applications.

Worthy mentions

An interesting option but one not used so much is Launcher 7, a stylish imitation of the sleek Windows Mobile interface that works on Android. Users reported the launcher to be extremely user friendly and fast on use. The biggest advantage besides other Windows launchers is that it supports Android widgets. To add one, only press the menu button from the home screen and choose “Add widget” option. After that, just choose the preferred one and specify its settings.

This launcher is easy to configure if you want to keep it simple, but if you want to feel the best Windows Phone experience it will be exhausting to configure. Unfortunately, another big miss is the absence of folder options. A lot of users are complaining about the lack of possibility to create new folders and maybe, in future, this problem will be resolved.

In brief, if you are searching for a simple and attractive launcher you can give it a try. It is available in the Google Play Store as a free version with ads on the application list and as a paid version without ads for $1.99.

Another application that drawn our attention, but this time in the bad way, is the newly announced Facebook Home. It is important to know that the new Facebook Home is a launcher available only for certain devices (Samsung Galaxy SIV, HTC One X). It has three main components: home/lock screen replacement, an app-launcher screen and “Chat Heads”.

Through the home and lock screen replacement Facebook will show images and status updates posted by your friends and with only one tap comments can be added. The app launcher substitutes Android’s grid with a smaller and less attractive one, while “Chat Heads” is a new notification system.

Although Facebook Home seems to only count for social fanatics, unfortunately it lacks proper quality and build. A lot of users are experiencing severe lag, black screens and other problems. Moreover, most haven’t even bothered to install the launcher and even though it was heavily marketed by Facebook and Google, it’s still a rarity amongst Androids. You can change that if you wish, by downloading the app.

Compared to previous weeks, the pace in android app market was relatively slow, and that reflects in the number of apps which made into our list for this week.

It covers apps and games, both free and paid. Be sure to check them out. If you own an iOS device, do take a look at our weekly roundup of best iPhone and iPad apps.

Angry Birds Friends (Free)

Tripomatic (Free)

We had previously suggested 10 handy travel apps for your android phone. Here is another one to beef up your smartphone. Tripomatic sorts your vacations into separate notebooks and allows you to create a list of events and attractions you’d like to see, and provides a image-centric view of your trip’s itinerary.

Dextr (Free)

We have seen a lot of interesting email based apps coming up in recent times. Dextr is the new kid on the block, which aims to sift through the email clutter by filtering your inbox to only include emails from your friends and family. It functions more like Priority Inbox for Gmail, but as a standalone app. It won’t be replacing your Gmail app on Android, but can be a handy secondary email client.

qrSend (Free)

Do you transfer a lot of files from PC or Mac to your Android device? If yes, you should check out qrSend which lets you scan QR codes in order to transfer files from Windows, Mac or Linux to Android. Unlike other WiFi based file transfer apps, qrSend doesn’t require a browser-based connection, instead uses the QR code. Click here to download the desktop clients.

While we can’t think of any good reason to put a 7-inch device to your face, clearly, manufacturers think along different lines. The Asus FonePad, not to be confused with the same outfit’s PadFone, is a 7-inch Android slate that comes with full voice calling capabilities. And while it’s definitely not the first one to do so, it’s notable because of its build, the attached promise of delivering more bang for the buck, and also the fact that there’s another extremely noteworthy 7-inch tablet in the market made by the same manufacturer – the Nexus 7. And while the two devices come with similar screens in terms of both size and resolution, they differ significantly as far as other core specs are concerned, including choice of processor, voice calling features and memory expansion capabilities. So let’s put the FonePad under the TechPP microscope to figure out if it has what it takes to blow our socks off.

Video Review

Design and hardware

With the Nexus 7, Asus has proven that great build quality can be achieved even with the use of plastic and at affordable price points. And with the FonePad, it has managed to follow the same path, and yet, come up with a device that not only feels premium, but also, successfully differentiates itself from its sibling – not an easy thing to accomplish. While the Nexus 7 attains its premium feel using high-quality plastics and a ‘dotted-for-your-pleasure’ design on its rear, the FonePad achieves it by using a faux metal finish.

The fascia is all glass, surrounded by a black border with an Asus logo at the bottom and the phone earpiece and front camera on top. The rear is where things stand out – and you get a metal finish back, with Asus and Intel Inside branding, a speaker near the bottom, and a chrome-encircled camera lens closer to the top. While the battery is sealed inside, there’s a grey plastic strip on top that comes off to reveal the micro-SIM and microSD slots. The bottom has the microUSB and 3.5mm audio socket, while the left spine is home to the volume rocker and a power / sleep key. Tipping the scales at 340 grams and measuring 196 x 120 x 10.4 mm, the device is quite portable, and you can just about hold it one-handed and use it as a phone, provided you don’t have tiny hands.

Rating: 8/10

Display

The 7-inch, 1280 x 800 IPS screen is similar to that on the Nexus 7, and boasts great viewing angles, and vivid colors. We feel that the 7-inch size is the sweet spot as far as usability and portability are concerned – it’s large enough for playing games and consuming media / content, and small enough to be tucked away easily into a bag or a purse, or slipped into a pocket, provided you love trench coats. However, the display is extremely reflective and smudge prone, and you may find yourself cleaning it ever so often.

Rating: 7.5/10

Camera

The FonePad has a 1.2-megapixel snapper at front for video calling, in comparison to the Nexus 7 that only has a VGA cam. However, the FonePad’s 3.15-megapixel autofocus rear camera is a 100 times better than the one on the Nexus 7. Sounds great, until you realize the latter has none! On a serious note though, the FonePad’s shooter offers a surprising degree of creative control and features, including ISO, white balance and exposure settings, effects, and scene modes. And while it has a panorama mode, it misses out on HDR and burst modes. As far as video capture is concerned, it can do 720p in 3GP format. In terms of video quality, it’s quite average and nothing to shout about. Notwithstanding the fact that tablets are hardly the most convenient image capture devices, it can take reasonable stills and videos in good lighting. And if you’re looking to share them mainly over social networks, the quality should suffice. Don’t try that with images captured in low light – they turn out grainy and lack detail.

Rating: 6.5/10

Software

If you prefer stock Android, the Nexus 7 is like manna from heaven – virgin and pure. On the other hand, the FonePad offers a slightly flavored (read lightly skinned) build of Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean, which doesn’t drastically alter the stock look and feel. Basically, Asus has toyed around a bit with the notification bar to provide connectivity toggles, and added a fourth soft key below that launches mini apps, akin to what we’ve seen earlier on Samsung and Sony’s devices. These mini apps include a browser, calendar, stopwatch, video player, email, and calculator. These can be accessed anytime and appear as resizable windows atop whatever else you’re using.

Text input is handled by a proprietary keyboard, which is reasonably feature-rich with word prediction and correction capabilities thrown in, but has a bit of a learning curve due to the backspace key placed directly to the right of the space bar. This apart, Asus has left the stock Android feel mostly untouched, but has loaded the tablet with a slew of bloatware. This includes a backup tool, an app locker, a call blocker and a dictionary, along with BuddyBuzz, a social feeds aggregator. There are also a few Asus-branded apps including Asus Splendid, a screen tweaking utility, Asus Story, a photo album creation and sharing app, and Asus Studio, a custom gallery. The Web Storage app provides 5GB free cloud storage, while Audio Wizard tweaks the sound output depending on usage. Quite a few reading apps are also thrown in – including Amazon Kindle, MyLibrary, Zinio and Press Reader. While we appreciate Asus’s enthusiasm in providing all these apps (likely helping newbies in the process), the software occupies precious storage space and may not be welcomed by those who don’t need all these.

Performance and battery life

It’s Intel Inside for the first time in a tablet. The ticker is a 1.2GHz Atom Z2420 chip that powers the show along with 1GB of RAM. Out of the 8GB of internal storage provided, only a little over 4GB is accessible, but thankfully, there’s that microSD slot to add more. Connectivity options are par for the course, and you won’t find anything fancy like NFC or DLNA.

In terms of performance, it’s clear that the FonePad won’t break any speed records, but performs routine tasks reasonably well. There’s a slight bit of delay launching heavy games, but they play smoothly for the most part. Some games like Shadowgun are incompatible though, and refuse to run. The video player is a little finicky with some formats, but otherwise, plays full HD videos smoothly. Another huge plus in its favor is the battery life. The 4,270 mAh battery packs enough juice to keep the slate alive for about a day and a half with regular usage.

Rating: 7/10

Conclusion

While different individuals may have different reasons to consider the Asus FonePad, and their usage patterns will vary as well, we feel that if a device of this size is considered as a primary telephony device, it works best for those who are not in the habit of carrying their smartphones in their pockets, including members of the fairer sex who can slip into their handbags. For others however, it works best as a secondary device with 3G data access on the go (and calling features being a bonus).

Priced at Rs 15,999 (~ $300), it competes head on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P3100 which has slightly better connectivity features. However, the FonePad trumps it with its better build and screen resolution. If phone calling features aren’t critical for you, you can also consider the Nexus 7 which offers a much faster Tegra 3 quad-core processor. However, it will not give you 3G data features at a similar price and you’d have to go for the more expensive 3G model for that. In other words, if you’re looking for a 7-incher with good build, reasonable performance, 3G data access and an affordable price tag, the Asus FonePad is as good as it gets.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10
