Although we can’t say for sure if a TV Show is created for geeks, or even what is a “TV Show for Geeks”, as the choice greatly depends on each one’s preferences, just like when choosing movies for geeks, we did try to put together a list of what we think are the best TV shows for geeks, nonetheless.

Even if we tried to be as objective as possible, and not create a list of our own favorite shows, one might think that some of these TV Shows should not belong on this list, or that others might deserve a spot. What is BitTorrent Live and How to Set it Up

A new service from BitTorrent was released a few days back: BitTorrent Live. This service will allow anyone to create their own Internet TV Shows and stream their videos live online. The service has much to offer and we think that many will be thrilled to use it.

Although the service is now in closed beta, it won’t be long until anyone will be able to create their own video broadcasts. Although, impatient users can sign up for beta testing right now and hope for the best.

What is BitTorrent Live?

In short, BitTorrent Live is a P2P (peer-to-peer) live video streaming system that allows users to broadcast a video feed from a webcam or from a third party app. This is great opportunity for those who want to create their own network with the topics that they find interesting. Also, it is a great tool for promoting services or for making yourself heard. Here’s how BitTorrent Live is explained on the official blog:

How to set it up?

The process isn’t all that complicated for those who have some understanding of how Internet streaming works. Also, for anyone who doesn’t have experience in this area, there are fairly detailed instructions on how to set it up on the BitTorrent Live website and users who sign up for the beta testing also receive an email explaining how to create your own live stream. We shall walk you through the set up process so you can get an idea on how it works.

First of all, you will need to create an account at the BitTorrent Live website. From here, you will want to look at what you need in order to make your live stream work. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will use a simple (very low quality unfortunately) WEB Camera an try to stream it to our account. In order to do this, you will need:

Web Camera
Internet connection
Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder
BitTorrent Live client

You will have to install your WEB Camera and make sure it works, afterwords, download and install Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. Once this is done, you will have to log in to your BitTorrent Live account, download the Client and open it (download link is at the bottom of the page and on your computer, it will run in background).

Once this is done, follow the links provided in the email you have received from BitTorrent (at step 3) and seek the custom links that will have to be added to Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder.

Open Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder and select the video device on the left side and on the right side, you will have to paste the links from the page opened before. From here, all you have to do is connect to the server and click on “Start” and on your channel page, you should see the video from your camera.

In addition, you can also stream from a capture card or any other camera, and if you don’t like to use Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder to stream your WEB Camera, you can use other third party apps to stream other video content. The instructions for how to set this up are also available on the website.

You are now all set to create your own live video stream. All that’s left now is to make your channel known by your friends and get your message to the world.

Watch Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Live Online [Unpacked 2013]

Samsung has been quite brilliant with its promotion of Galaxy S4. Now, with less than a day to go, they have announced that the Samsung Unpacked 2013 event in New York (which all of us know is actually the Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch event) will be live-streamed online on March 14th 2013, starting at 7pm EDT.

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the next flagship smartphone from Samsung, and as neutral tech lovers, it’s heartening to see a non-Apple product generating so much interest and hype before the actual launch. Having sold over 100 million smartphones under Galaxy brand, Samsung is generating tremendous amount of interest with the upcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone. The predecessor for Galaxy S4 was launched just before the Olympics last year, in April. So, Samsung is quite content with yearly cycles for its flagship devices.

Going by the leaked videos and teaser pics by Samsung, the Galaxy S4 is expected to look similar to Galaxy S3 in terms of design but with a kitchen sink thrown in. Some of the rumors include 3D camera, smart ‘eye’ scrolling, Octa-core Exynos SoC, Full HD Solux display and more.

So you got that latest smartphone everyone’s been waiting for, the tablet that will revolutionize the handheld computing, and you never use anything short of the newest version of Android and iOS. But, what about your television? Is it at par with the rest of your uber-cool gadgetry? And how often do you upgrade it?

No wonder the television is referred to as the ‘idiot box’. The television is not only among the oldest gadgets possessed by man, it is also one of those devices which is fiddled every day and yet it is supposed to perform efficiently for at least decades – when the same long life is not expected from your smartphone or tablet. Every device is riding high on the wave of technological revolution but the television is still friends with the firstborn person of the house.

Over the last couple of years, the activity of watching TV has lost its charm. The whys and wherefores of it could be listed to the (over)availability of other options, user-friendliness of said devices and their easy approachability. AdAge recently reported that Youtube is planning to launch many paid subscription channels and thereby, put more middle-of-the-road shows.

On one hand, where all of this sounds amazing and you can’t help but agree, this has also started a chaos, a constructive chaos. The greatest benefit of Youtube or any other online video portal is, letting you integrate such cool videos with your social networking life. Content discovery, delivery and its integration with social media has never been this strategically easy!

Why we still need TV

Though part of me still misses TV, that golden era of flipping channels with the remote all day, dismissing anything slightly uninteresting and just ending up watching an old Seinfeld episode you’ve already seen 10 times, surfing channels when you stumble upon a childhood favorite movie and remembering those lovely memories – that element of surprise in TV viewing can never be replaced.

Because awesome as it is, Youtube is based on the demand and supply principle. You want to watch something you enter it in the search and watch it. Ergo, the need of the hour for television is to integrate a facility where the user does not have to flip amongst hundreds of needless channels in languages they don’t understand and to make available only the needful. And in all frankness, who wants to pay for the channels that they watch?

What my next TV should look like?

We need a new breath of technology in the TV field to relieve the complexity and make it an easier experience. We need an integrated pattern recognition system where like web browsers, our TV also senses a pattern and caters to us based on our preferences and the frequency of viewed data.

We also need to go wireless and decrease all the hassles about cords and cables. We need voice recognition systems that will be the next step and eliminate remote control allowing me to talk to my television, giving commands just like in those sci-fi movies. This year at CES, we witnessed many such advances, like a curve TV Screen resolving the corner blurriness issue. But the real need of the hour is the collaboration of “Smart TV” with the satellite receiver box. Intel is working on it, Eric Hugglers, general Manager of Intel Media told TheVerge

“We’re working with the entire industry to figure out how to get proper television.”

At CES, we beheld the rise of many 4K TVs, but is that what we really need right now? Do we retain the requisite infrastructure? It’s cool as such, but many countries haven’t paced up with such affordable internet; and how are you planning to acquire the content for it when the half world is still scaling their internet speed in kBps?

Here, at Technology Personalized we love science and whenever something interesting happens, we’re all eyes and ears. The close approach of the asteroid 2012 D14 is one of those moments. There are two things very special about this and those of you who love space and Sci-Fi will surely want to know what it’s all about.

First of all, this will be the closest asteroid in history to pass Earth, but rest assured, scientists say it won’t touch us. Secondly, and here it gets funny, this asteroid is said to be worth almost $200 billion. Yes, that’s right – 200,000,000,000 dollars; that’s almost 3 dollars for every living person on this planet.

This begs for a question – how big is this rock, anyway? Well, not too big, actually, as it has a diameter of 160 feet (50 meters) and a weight of 190,000 tons. For those really afraid that it could hit the Earth, they should know that scientists have declared that this is impossible. However, in its flyby, the asteroid will pass at a distance of 27,700 km (17,200 miles) from the surface. And there’s also only a 0.00034% risk (which means 1 in 294,000) that the 2012 DA14 asteroid will hit the Earth between the year 2080 and 2109. Even if that happens, we won’t be there to witness it anyway! Here’s a video below simulating the trajectory of this “expensive” asteroid:

It will actually cross with the trajectory of communication satellites, so there’s a chance that a collision might happen, so why not witness the event live? If you have a nice telescope, then you will definitely have a space show. But for the rest of us, what we can do is to watch it live online.

1. Watch online the 2012 D14 asteroid flyby: the Bareket Observatory in Israel - The entire event will last for 1.5 hours and the webcast will start at 19:30UTC. Images will appear static and once at 30 seconds will be reset.

Guide to Follow and Watch Apple iPad Mini Event Online

If you were thinking that October is almost over, then think again. It’s far from over as we have a huge line-up of tech announcements lined up in the next 10 days, starting with Apple’s iPad mini event on October 23rd, followed by Microsoft’s Windows 8 Launch on October 26th, and culminating with twin events by Google & Microsoft on October 29th.

The Apple iPad mini event (taglined “We’ve got a little more to show you”) will be held at the California Theatre in San Jose tomorrow, and the event will begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern time. Click here to know the start time in your timezone. The invites were sent out to a select few journalists and bloggers last week, who are expected to live blog from the event.

Much like the iPhone 5, there have been a lot of leaks and rumors surrounding the iPad mini launch. The smaller iPad is expected to boast a 7.85″ non-retina display, A5 or A6 chip, much thinner form factor, lightning connector and possibly iPhone 5 like aluminum back.

In addition to the iPad mini, there are rumors of a new 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina display, new Mac Minis and refreshed iMacs being announced at the event. Though the leaks have been with regards to the hardware, I personally believe that the main focus will be on a new ecosystem surrounding the iPad mini.

Watch iPad mini event Live Streaming Online

Let’s get this straight. Apple has always avoided to live stream their product launches and events on the web. The last time they live streamed an event was back in in September 2010 for the iPod music event, and then repeated that in October 2010 too. Then on, they went back to their strict self, by deciding not to live webcast their events.

Now, just in case Apple & Tim Cook change their mind and decide to live stream iPad mini event online, then this is the link you need to bookmark*:

*Update: MacRumors is reporting that Apple has quietly added the Apple Events channel to the Apple TV. This surely increases the possibility of Apple live streaming the event, specially since tuning to the channel asks viewers to tune-in at 10am PDT! Sweet!

Update 2: Apple has confirmed that they will be live streaming the iPad mini event on the below link. But then, you’d need to have an Apple TV (2nd gen or 3rd gen); Safari 4 or later on Mac OS X v10.6 or later; Safari on iOS 4.2 or later.

Earlier: Even if they don’t live stream the iPad mini event, expect them to upload the video right there, once the event ends on October 23rd. Other possible live streaming links include Twit Live TV and CNET livestream, though the chances of live keynote streaming are pretty slim. But these two are great links if you prefer a video coverage over live blogging.

Also, the same guys who promised live streaming of iPhone 5 event last month on Ustream are promising the live stream of iPad mini event as well. From what I saw back then, it was just a bunch of geeks chatting about the event and not the actual webcast. Ironically, they are asking for donations to do this!

Guide to Follow and Watch Apple iPhone 5 Event Online

Possibly the most exciting week, and for sure, the most exciting month in tech has just started. Apple’s iPhone 5 event is scheduled for September 12th at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

As always, the invites for the special media event were sent out to a select few journalists and bloggers, who are expected to live blog from the event. The event will kickstart at 10am sharp in the morning with a keynote by the Apple CEO, Tim Cook. Click here to know the start time in your timezone.

Unlike the past, there have been many leaks regarding the new iPhone which look reliable to us. The new iPhone (or iPhone 5?) is expected to carry a bigger 4-inch screen with 16:9 display, while maintaining the rectangular design with rounded corners as we have seen in iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S. Other than that, we expect a faster (quad-core) processor, improved camera, NFC & possibly 4G LTE as well. The final version of iOS 6 will be announced as well.
