When the whole world is tripping over the stale and lame April Fool jokes, OnePlus, the Chinese tech startup has launched an actual product today. The OnePlus DR-1 (DRone, gotcha!) is a palm-sized miniature drone that you can pilot with an included remote for a bit of fun. OnePlus claims that the DR-1 is the world’s smallest remote-controlled quadcopter.
OnePlus had been teasing a new product launch for quite sometime using the hashtag #GameChanger. Many people were expecting a portable gaming console or the likes, but OnePlus has surprised them all by releasing a drone, which is amongst the geekiest gifts this season.
With a wingspan of just 70 mm (2.75 inches), the limited-edition DR-1 is the smallest remote-controlled drone in the world. Four flexible blades generate impressive lift and movement speed, and flights are made simple with ultra-bright orientation LEDs.
It carries a 100mAh Li-Po battery which provides a flight time of 5 – 8 minutes and can charge back within 20 minutes. For someone new to the drone/quadcopter world, this might seem to be ridiculously low numbers, but it’s on par with the best in drone business.
It’s interesting to see the Chinese companies expand their product horizon beyond the usual mobile devices. Yesterday, we saw Xiaomi launching a Smart Bathroom Scale and a Smart Plug Board. This OnePlus DR-1 drone though will be manufactured and sold in limited quantities and can be purchased from the global site directly for $20 (+shipping). No information yet on if & when the drone be available in India.
