We couldn’t see Sony’s A Game last year and the Xperia X along with the X Performance failed to make a mark. However, the company is back at MWC and this time around Sony has launched Xperia XZ Premium, a successor to the last years Xperia XZ. Sony is crystal clear on how it wants to position the XZ and this is where the ‘Premium’ tag comes into play.
To begin with, Xperia has stuck with bezels, yes in a time when manufacturers are getting rid of the bezels, Sony begs to differ. The Xperia XZ Premium comes with the same rectangular design philosophy we had witnessed in the earlier Xperia X series and well, it kind of looks classic with all the sleek devices around. The Xperia XZ Premium comes equipped with a 5.5-inch display running at 4K and it also supports HDR.
The thing that sets the Xperia XZ Premium apart is what’s powering the device, yes the XZ Premium is powered by Snapdragon 835 along with 4GB of RAM and will launch in the spring in the U.S. However this also means that by the time the Xperia XZ Premium is available Samsung would have already beaten it with the Galaxy S8 in the stores. Also, the Xperia XZ Premium comes with a glass finished surface that is made out of Gorilla Glass 5 and the phone offers IP68 protection.
The camera has been the Xperia series forte from long and the Xperia XZ Premium is no different. The device boasts of a 19-Megapixel primary sensor along with the Sony’s new Motion Eye system which aims at improving the image stabilization. The secondary camera is a 13-Megapixel sensor and can record up to FHD. The Xperia XZ Premium is backed by a 2,900mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and this is expected to be a downside since the phone is expected to power up a flagship Snapdragon 835 along with a 4K display. We know the Sony’s Stamina mode will come in handy but what’s the use of the features if you can use them when needed.
Apart from the Xperia XZ Premium, Sony has also launched the Xperia XZs which comes with a smaller 5.2-inch FHD device and is backed by the same 2,900mAh battery pack. The Xperia XZs is powered by Snapdragon 820 and is expected to launch in April before the Xperia XZ Premium launches. Price for both the devices are yet to be announced.
