Microsoft’s escapades when it comes to building a social media platform are no secrets, the company recently shut down one of its social networking platform called the Socl, yes, Yammer still has its own user base and MSN is past its glorious days but that apart Microsoft has been largely unsuccessful when it comes to creating a social media platform. The company, however, is not stopping at this and has now given yet another try at social with a new iMessage app called “Who’s In.”
The app is designed to help friends plan events and also other things like outings, movie dates, dinners out and visits to nearby attractions. The app is now available on the iMessage App store and it can be only accessed via iMessage. Once installed, you need to mention an activity to the app, for instance, “Eat and Drink,” “Watch a movie,” and “Visit an attraction.” The app then fires up Microsoft’s search engine Bing in order to fetch the suggestions. It’s then that the app will suggest movie showtimes and other things based on your location.
Furthermore, the app asks you to enter the exact details of the event including time and date. Who’s In will also let you create a custom event along with the name, description and location? In the next step, a card is created for your event and this can be shared with your friends whom you want to hang out with. The app also allows you to customize the format of the card. Recipients can RVSP to the event by clicking on the “in” or the “out” button. The participants can also suggest alternate date and timings which will appear in the form of the poll to the organizer. Microsoft has already launched iMessage apps for OneDrive, Yammer, and Bing.
The app is clearly aimed at folks who use the SMS and iMessage a lot. That said its high times Apple addressed the iMessage app store issue and bring the apps to the forefront, this downside is something that has been hurting app adoption and it’s very likely that the Who’s In will be a victim of the same.
