One of the perks of owning a OnePlus smartphone is regular Android updates. Although buyers of the two-year-old OnePlus 2 will surely disagree with that as the handset hasn’t received any major releases since last year’s March when the company rolled out an OTA for Android Marshmallow. However, it seems like their problems won’t be improving anytime soon as a new customer service email has revealed that the device isn’t planned to receive further updates.
This essentially means that the OnePlus 2 won’t be getting the official Android Nougat update which is quite bewildering since the smartphone has been updated only once since its release. OnePlus 2 was launched with Android 5.1 Lollipop and its official Android Marshmallow build was rolled out more than a year ago. Fortunately, OnePlus products benefit from a wide developer support and you can easily grab a third-party ROM right now and have Nougat running on it in minutes.
OnePlus 2 was originally announced back in July of 2015 and featured some of the most impressive specifications of its time including 4GB of RAM, Snapdragon 810 processor, fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, a new software skin, all at a dirt cheap price. Unfortunately, the software wasn’t up to the mark which eventually led to a relatively poor response and negative reception from critics. Despite that, though, it’s quite surprising to see that the company is ignoring its user base. In comparison, its predecessor, the OnePlus One received three major software updates including Android Marshmallow.
Just a couple of days back, Pete Lau, the OnePlus co-founder had confirmed Android O update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Considering that the OnePlus 5 is just round the corner, the timing of this news couldn’t have been worse for the company. Having said that, it’s a pity if this turns out to be true. With just one or two devices a year, one would expect OnePlus to support their flagships at least for 2 years.
That being said, this isn’t completely confirmed by OnePlus. We have reached out to them and we will update the article as soon as we get a reply.
