You most probably have a couple of old smartphones lying around and eating dust. Hence, it only makes sense to boot them up again and turn them into a single-purpose home device, be it a baby monitor or perhaps, one of those chore trackers which are gaining quite some traction on Kickstarter. Yes, with a simple app, you can mutate your phone into a routine monitor. Here’s how to get started.
To begin with, head over to the Play store and download a free app called “Chorr”. Fundamentally, Chorr is designed as a 24/7 helper for tracking your regime and making sure you don’t miss anything. The app comes with a bold interface that is easily visible even if you have a couple of items added. The developer suggests that it’s “intended to be used with an older device velcroed to a wall while plugged into a power supply” which seems quite appropriate. The app’s motives are inspired by the recent trend of smart IoT gadgets such as the fridge magnets which come with a touchscreen.
Fire up Chorr and sign up with an ID and PIN. These credentials can be utilized to sign into other phones, preferably your primary phone and access the data if you’re on-the-go. You will need to grant a few permissions in order for it to keep the screen always turned on. Hit the add button for creating a task and a new group. Fill in the name, select an appropriate icon and a score. The score is essentially a way to reward yourself at the end of the day. Clicking any particular task will also allow you to configure due dates and other related properties. The calendar icon does what you’d expect it to do.
While Chorr does serve its purpose well, there are still a few things the developer should add. For instance, a more modern interface, weather details, Google Assistant integration and a couple more features that would make it seem more user-friendly. However, at the time of writing this article, the app was just released. Hence, I expect the developer to soon release more updates in the coming weeks.
