First introduced in 2001 the Apple iPod revolutionised the MP3 industry just like how Sony did it with their Walkman series in the late 70’s. Apple was lauded for employing a simplistic design and user interface for the music player, traits that set it apart from its competitors. The scroll wheel introduced in the first generation iPod was carried on in all the subsequent models. Apple has now announced that they will be discontinuing iPad Nano and iPod shuffle, both of which don’t run the iOS.
It’s pretty evident that Apple is trying to streamline its offering and bring all the devices on the iOS, the software that powers iPhone. What Apple has done is that they have launched two new models of iPod touch with double capacity. Apple’s website has been updated to reflect the changes. The new iPod touch comes with a price tag of $199 for the 32GB variant and the 128GB one retails for $299. Both the discontinued model had already been alienated by Apple since the users were not treated to an update. The new iPod touch supports all the iOS apps and what this means is that apart from listening to music iPod users can also use streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu.

Apple has been trying to draw a line between the iPhone and the iPod since the beginning, in fact, this was the very reason why the iPhone was not called the “iPod Phone.” That being said Apple is not discontinuing the iPod lineup instead it’s changing its approach. The new audio products are named “AirPods” and “HomePod.” The Apple iPod Nano and the Shuffle lacked the ability to interact with other devices and they also didn’t support Apple Music.
