Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro Abandon Side Bezels and Bet Big on Artificial Intelligence

Huawei has today official unveiled a pair of flagship smartphones under its Mate series with the launch of the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro in Munich, Germany. The new phones, as the leaks suggested, double down on the extinction of bezels and come with improved internals including the company’s latest Kirin-branded processor.

The display on both of these phones come with an edge-to-edge panel with minimal bezels. The regular Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch 2K LCD panel, while the Mate 10 Pro comes with a Full HD+ (2160 x 1080) OLED screen. The aspect ratio on the latter is 18:9 as it’s equipped with a relatively narrower frame. As a result, the fingerprint sensor also resides in different locations — on the front and rear on the Mate 10 and 10 Pro respectively. The displays on each of these support HDR 10 as well.

The 3D-curved glass design offers better grip, says Huawei. In addition to that, the Huawei Mate 10 is IP53 spill and dust resistant, while the 10 Pro is IP67-certified allowing it to remain submerged under 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

They are powered by the company’s own eight-core Kirin 970 along with a dedicated chipset for processing neural networks. Furthermore, they are the first phones with a 12-core GPU. The Mate 10 Pro comes with 6GB of RAM, 128GB internal storage and the Mate 10 with 4GB, 64GB internal memory. Huawei is also doubling down on various everyday connectivity features such as concurrent 4G and VoLTE compatibility on both SIM slots, better location tracking that functions even if you’re passing through a tunnel and more. The phones also have huge 4,000mAh batteries just like the Mate 9 and charge through USB Type-C. It’s also worth mentioning the Mate 10 features a standard headphone jack, while the Mate 10 Pro doesn’t.

The machine learning algorithms have been extended to your calls as well. The Mate 10 can automatically enhance the mic’s input irrespective of how softly and quietly you speak. The Leica-branded camera arrangement includes an impressive dual lens setup with an aperture of f/1.6. One of the sensors is a regular 12-megapixel RGB shooter while the other is a 20-megapixel monochrome one. Together, Huawei says both of these cameras will produce much more accurate shots and of course, yeah, bokeh effects.

Interestingly Huawei has included a pair of Image Signal Processors instead of just one. Therefore the phone is able to process images relatively quicker and offer better response and focus rates. Shooting objects in motion is also supposed to be less blurry thanks to this. That apart the company has also embedded a range of AI tricks that predict which object you are trying to capture and shifts the settings accordingly. This works locally on the device, hence you don’t need to worry about Huawei accumulating your pictures to improve algorithm’s accuracy.

The new phones ship with Android Oreo with Huawei’s own custom skin on top. There are a few enhancements specifically for the FullView display such as optimised multi-window, updated system apps and more. They can also adjust the display’s color based on ambient lighting to make it more comfortable to look at. In addition to that, the Mate 10 employs on-device processing to fabricate a model of how you use the phone and allocates resources accordingly. Yes, we’ve heard this sort of jargon before and I’m not sure how effective it will be this time either.

Huawei is also debuting a PC mode with the Mate 10 and Mate 10. The feature essentially lets you turn your phone into a desktop by just plugging it with a Type-C or DisplayPort cable in a monitor without a dock whatsoever. You can also use the phone as a trackpad and keyboard, so you don’t need any additional hardware.

The new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be available in four color options including black, blue, “mocha brown” and “pink gold.” There’s also a Porche Design special Edition variant which features a ceramic rear. The devices are priced at €699 ($824) for the Mate 10, €799 ($942) for the Mate 10 Pro, and a staggering $1,395 ($1,645) for the Porsche Design Mate 10 Pro. They will be available at the beginning of next month.
