Samsung has launched its latest flip phone in China. It’s a part of its W series lineup, which the company launches exclusively in China and South Korea. The latest clamshell smartphone from the Korean electronics giant is called the Samsung W2018. It is currently available only in China, but Samsung may soon bring it to its homeland. With that said, the new W2018 will most probably never make it to any of Samsung’s global markets.
The Samsung W2018 is a flagship device that packs as much as the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy S8 but in a clamshell format. In fact, it’s a mix of both and aimed at the handful of flip phone lovers residing in the two countries. Just like previous years, the W2018 range bears a rather premium built. It packs a two 4.2 inch Full HD displays, one of which is located on the top just like a modern-day smartphone, while the other lies on the inside; and can be seen only after opening the hinge.
Under the hood, the Samsung W2018 bears a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. This is by far the fastest chip available in the market, and power smartphones like the OnePlus 5T, LG V30 and others. Going by flip phone traditions, the Samsung W2018 incorporates an alphanumeric keyboard bearing well-spaced out backlit keys.
The most interesting feature of the new flip phone is its camera. The smartphone bears a single rear camera sensor that apparently boasts of the widest aperture ever seen in any mobile device. With an aperture of f/1.5, it’s expected to outrightly shine in low light conditions. Moreover, Samsung has played around with the software to give W2018 to vary the aperture from f/1.5 to f/2.4. That said, this is simply a software level implementation, and has got nothing to do with the hardware.
Samsung is yet to reveal the price of the W2018 yet, however, if rumors turn out to be true; then it’s going to be a rather expensive device. Tipsters speculate a price upwards of the $1,000 mark, thereby placing the smartphone in the league of the Apple iPhone X (price wise).
