In the recent past, smartphones have become the defacto choice for photography and videography. Despite the evolution of smartphone cameras, most of them still suffer when it comes to stabilizing the videos. It is for this reason that we take help from external handheld stabilizers. DJI Osmo mobile, one of the popular handheld stabilizers has just gotten itself a successor. The Osmo Mobile 2 arrives with improved features, and the best part is that it comes at a lower price tag of just $130 as against $299 for its predecessor.
The DJI Osmo has been preferred by live streamers and YouTubers. One of the main reasons to opt for handheld stabilizers is that they help capture videos professionally without the need for expensive video equipment. One can simply snap on the Osmo to their smartphone, and they are good to go. The joystick on the Osmo is designed to help users move the camera around without any jerks or jitters.
That being said, the first generation DJI Osmo Mobile did suffer from some perennial problems. For instance, the battery life was only 3-4 hours and it eventually also drained the smartphone battery. Yet another Achilles heel was the overheating problem. DJI has apparently fixed these issues, and the company promises 15 hours on a single charge and is also offering a way to charge your phone with the Osmo Mobile 2.
Furthermore, the controls have also been simplified, and the gimbal now comes with an inbuilt zoom button as well. Unlike the first generation, the Osmo Mobile 2 is lighter in construction (nylon build as against the metal in its predecessor) and comes with fewer screws. The phone holder now comes with a new spring-loaded frame and is supposed to hold the smartphone in a much better way.
The DJI Osmo companion app has also undergone metamorphosis. The DJI Go app now offers multiple time-lapse modes including a Hyperlapse and a Motion Timelapse mode. Lastly, the $130 price tag is something that will help the Osmo Mobile 2 sell in huge numbers. The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 will be available first on apple.com from January 23.
