Earlier this year, messaging platform, Hike introduced a new Android-based platform called “Total” which employed the USSD service for allowing access to various services without the need for an active data connection. Today, phone maker, Intex has launched the first two smartphones powered by Hike Total — Aqua Lions N1 and Lions T1 Lite. Both the phones are priced in the sub $50 price range at Rs 2823 and Rs 3899 respectively and feature entry-level specifications.
The biggest highlight, of course, here is Hike Total which lets users access the news, cricket scores, transfer payments, instant messaging, and more, all without mobile data. Hike does so by implementing the technology behind USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) because of which Total is both free and only requires a phone number for setup.
These characteristics matter a lot considering the type of users Hike is targetting with Total, most of which probably don’t even have an email address. Furthermore, Hike Total can function with the Internet whenever required. For instance, when someone sends you an image in a chat, the app will prompt you to buy a data pack for viewing it. You can read more about it here.
Apart from that, however, the Aqua Lions N1 and Lions T1 Lite are your run-in-the-mill budget phones. They have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 4G VoLTE support, and quad-core processors. In addition to that, the storage can be expanded through a MicroSD card and both of them come preloaded with Android 7.0 Nougat.
The Aqua Lions N1 features a 4-inch display, while the Lions T1 Lite has a 5-inch one. Both of them also have a layer of 2.5 curved glass. The former comes with a 2-megapixel rear sensor and a VGA front shooter but the latter has a slightly better arrangement which includes a 5-megapixel rear lens along with a 2-megapixel selfie shooter.
There’s only a single color option available for the Aqua Lions N1 — Black, while the Lions T1 Lite comes in three — Royal Black, Steel Grey, and Champagne. And of course, there’s a cashback scheme. Both the phones are part of Airtel’s ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative. Therefore, after a period of 36 months, Airtel subscribers can avail a cashback of Rs 1500 cashback for Aqua Lions N1 and Rs 2000 for Lions T1 Lite.
