Asus has launched its Zenfone 5Z smartphone in India to compete against the likes of OnePlus and Honor, for a very aggressive price of Rs. 29,999 for the base variant. This is in line with the leaks we saw yesterday.
The Zenfone 5Z, in terms of specifications, comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip under the hood coupled with the Adreno 630 GPU and runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with Asus’ ZenUI 5.0 on top. There is a 6.2-inch FullHD+ LCD display on the front with an aspect ratio of 19:9, thanks to the notch. The smartphone has a dual rear camera setup with a 12MP primary sensor, along with an f/1.8 aperture lens, and an 8MP secondary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. For selfies, there is a front-facing 8MP camera with an aperture of f/2.0 and 84 degree field of view. There is also support for face unlock as well as some AI features baked into the camera. The Zenfone 5Z is backed by a 3300mAh battery along with support for AI based fast charging. The rear camera has support for 4K video recording at 60fps, and the impressive factor, is that both the rear cameras, as well as the front camera have support for Electronic Image Stabilization, more commonly known as EIS. Notably, the smartphone comes with a hybrid SIM slot, allowing you to use a micro SD card to expand storage, something that its biggest competitor, the OnePlus 6 lacks. Another aspect where the Zenfone 5Z does better than the OnePlus 6, is audio. The Zenfone 5Z is equipped with a stereo speakers set up with the earpiece doubling up as front firing speaker.
Asus has talked a lot about its Artificial Intelligence or AI implementation on the Zenfone 5Z which is claimed to help with faster boot times, faster app launching, as well as scene detection on the camera app. It would be interesting to see how many of these claims turn out to be true in real life, something that you should watch out for in our hype-r-check series.
The Asus Zenfone 5Z will be sold exclusively on Flipkart, and the pricing seems to match with what was leaked yesterday. The base variant of the Zenfone 5Z with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage will be sold for Rs. 29,999, while the variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will be sold for Rs. 32,999 and the top end variant, with 8GB of RAM along with 256GB storage will be sold for Rs. 36,999. There are a few launch offers like no cost EMI with ICICI Bank credit cards along with flat Rs. 3000 off, as well as Flipkart’s Protection Plan for Rs. 499. Also, Jio users will get 100GB of additional data, and a cashback of Rs. 2200. For this price, Asus seems to be offering an extremely compelling package when compared to the OnePlus 6, but we’ll have to wait to see how the Zenfone 5Z holds up with time. Watch out for our full review of the Zenfone 5Z, which should be out in a few days.
