Many of us were hoping Apple to update the MacBook Pro lineup during WWDC this year. However, this time, the event was completely software-oriented, which made us question if there will be an upgrade to the MacBook Pro series this year or not. However, Apple today has announced an upgraded version of its MacBook Pro 13 as well as 15-inch models, that too just the variants with the Touch Bar.
While the design might not be a radical shift from its predecessor, the update is more than just a spec bump. The 15-inch MacBook Pro will now come with an eighth generation Intel Core i7 or i9 processor and the ability to spec up the RAM up to 32GB DDR4 memory and the storage up to a whopping 4TB. The highest end processor can run at 2.9 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.8 GHz, and the GPU is a Radeon Pro with 4GB of memory. The base variant of the MacBook Pro 15-inch starts at the same price as the last gen model, at $2,399, whereas in India, the new MacBook Pro 15-inch will retail for Rs. 1,99,900 for the base variant.
The MacBook Pro 13-inch model, on the other hand, gets a bump up to a quad-core i5 or i7 CPU with clock speeds of up to 4.5 GHz Turbo Boost, paired with the Intel Iris 655 integrated graphics with 128GB of eDRAM. Storage tops out at 2TB on this variant. Similar to the 15-inch model, the price of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is same as that of its predecessor as well, starting at $1,799, while the India pricing starts at Rs. 1,49,900.
Thanks to more powerful internals, Apple has also upgraded the battery packs on the new MacBooks but does not promise a better battery life as more battery hungry internals and a higher capacity battery seems to nullify each other. As far as ports are concerned, the new MacBooks will retain the four Thunderbolt USB Type-C ports along with a 3.5mm audio jack. Apple has also added its True Tone displays available on latest iPhones, to the new MacBooks, which basically changes the color temperature of the screen based on your environment.
The new MacBooks are also the first laptops to support the “Hey Siri” functionality to trigger Apple’s voice assistant. This is possible due to Apple’s specialized chip which is being referred to as the ‘T2’. There’s also a new sleeve for your shiny new MacBook Pro which will come in an assortment of colors. While a lot of previous gen MacBook Pro users complained of the sub-par keyboard, Apple has upgraded it to a Butterfly gen-three keyboard with the only improvement being that it’s quieter than the previous one. The new MacBook Pro laptops can be purchased from the Apple store, or other Apple certified retailers if you’re in India, starting later this month.
