The trend of dual cameras on smartphones has been there for a couple of years now, but Huawei took it up a notch by having three rear facing cameras on the P20 Pro which gave it a lot more versatility than having a secondary camera for just depth sensing. LG followed by having three on the rear and two on the front on the V40 ThinQ. However, Samsung doesn’t want to be left behind now and soon after launching the triple camera touting Galaxy A7, they have now launched the Galaxy A9 (2018) with a whopping four-camera setup to the back which probably does everything you possibly can on a camera.
Since the phone is all about those cameras, let’s go over them briefly. The main camera sensor is a 24MP lens with an aperture of f/1.7 which should ideally result in good low-light photography. Then there’s a depth sensor which we find on most dual camera smartphones, rated at 5MP along with an f/2.2 aperture to facilitate portrait mode or as Samsung likes to call it, Live Focus.
The third camera is a wide-angle implementation similar to ones found on LG’s smartphones, and has a resolution of 8MP with f/2.4 aperture but the main highlight of this lens is its 120 degree field of view. Finally, there’s a 10MP telephoto lens which offers 2x optical zoom and an aperture of f/2.4 once again. And oh, the front facing camera has a resolution of 24MP with an f/2.0 aperture. A total of five cameras on this smartphone. Wow.
Now that we’re finally done with the cameras, let’s move on to the rest of the specs. The Galaxy A9 (2018) has a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution. Under the hood, there’s the powerful Snapdragon 660 SoC along with 128 GB of internal storage coupled with either 6 or 8GB of RAM. The phone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo and comes with Bixby and NFC which means there’s support for Samsung Pay. The back is made of 3D curved glass and houses the fingerprint scanner.
The Galaxy A9 (2018) will be launched in three color options – Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink in select markets which includes India starting November. The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) price starts at EUR 599 (approx Rs. 51,300) and GBP 549 (approx Rs. 53,700). Indian price is still unknown.
