Comio – a Chinese smartphone manufacturer backed by Topwise Communications is about to close its operations in India. Allegedly, the company’s management decided to continue operations for a few more months to clear the dues and also hang-in to provide the after-sales support to customers as promised but is now stopping its operations amidst all the chaos. According to the reports, the China based-team left the country abruptly earlier this month and is now asking the company to shut its operations completely. To this, the CEO of the company, Sanjay Kalirona has filed a police complaint and also informed the government about the closure of the business.
According to a copy of letter analyzed by TeleAnalysis, the CEO quotes following in a letter, “We have filed a police complaint and also informed all government regulatory authorities about the present situation of the company and waiting for their directions“.
The company started last year, following the launch of three budget-range smartphones, the P1, S1, and C1. It also offered a year and a hundred days of warranty along with a buyback plan, according to which the company would return 40-per cent off on its devices, in case a user decides to return their device within a year. The devices had some pretty decent specifications, and there’s no doubt that they did manage to sell around 9 lac units in one year itself (claimed by the company).
However, things aren’t how they seem like always, and an email from the distribution channel of India makes it crystal clear. According to the email, though the company might have sold 9 lakh units, the quality of these devices have been a weak point, and hence it did not manage to have a sustained impact on users. In addition to that, the letter also claims that even after raising their complaints, the company did not react accordingly, and blamed the Chinese management team for not providing enough capital investment to sustain in the market.
As it stands, the employees of the company are in doubt related to both, their jobs and the pending dues that need to be cleared. As the report claims, “the employees are under tremendous pressure, and are being asked to leave their job”. In addition to the employees, it’s not a going to end well for the people who bought their smartphones, as of now, they do not stand a chance to get any assistance on their device if something goes wrong.
With stocks of worth 200 crores lying around, and distributors not being able to sell-out as demanded, the company’s fate is really on the line.
