Smartphone brands seem to have developed an affinity towards car manufacturers of late with Oppo tying up with Lamborghini, Huawei with Porche, Vertu with Ferrari, if anyone remembers that, and OnePlus now jumping onto the bandwagon with their partnership with McLaren as a result of which, we now have the McLaren Edition OnePlus 6T launched today with the tagline “Salute to Speed”.
Unlike most other color variants or special edition OnePlus devices in the past, this one gets a slight spec bump which makes it all the more enticing. For starters, the RAM has now been upgraded to 10GB (2GB more than the laptop I’m typing on), and the already quick Dash Charge has been replaced by Warp Charge, a new 30W charging solution which is theoretically 50% faster than the regular OnePlus 6T. OnePlus claims to have added a proprietary integrated circuit both in the phone as well as the charging adapter which is said to charge the phone up to 50% in just 20 minutes.
The exterior has also received an overhaul to match the theme and now has a subtle orange hue on the bottom edge along with carbon fiber accents around the camera module, reminiscent of an F1 car. The carbon fiber however is under the glass, just like the Avengers Edition OnePlus 6, so you won’t really be able to feel the texture unless you decide to use the kevlar case in the box. There are some UI changes to go along as well like wallpapers matching the theme and orange icons in the quick toggles and settings menus.
To recall, the OnePlus 6T launched a few weeks back comes with the Snapdragon 845 SoC, a large 6.41-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a tear-drop notch, 16+20MP f/1.7 dual cameras to the back, a 16MP f/2.0 selfie shooter, in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 3700mAh battery. The software is taken care of by Oxygen OS based on top of Android 9 Pie. The McLaren Edition launched today is equipped with 10GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage.
While the OnePlus 6T was sold in Mirror Black, Midnight Black and Thunder Purple color options till today, the newly launched McLaren edition carries the Speed Orange color and will retail for a price of £649. The Indian launch is scheduled for tomorrow.
