Amidst the race of becoming the top content provider with the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix, Star India is adding a new kind of content on its OTT platform, Hotstar, called the ‘Hotstar Specials’. And for this, it has partnered with some of the best storytellers in the business, including the likes of Shekhar Kapur, Kabir Khan, Salman Khan, to name a few.
With the new kind of content coming to Hotstar, we can expect the platform to have a wide variety of Indian content on a larger scale than ever before. The step comes from the company as an effort to increase awareness of Indian content among the content consumers in the country. According to the company, Hotstar Specials will provide makers with a platform that can be leveraged to make their quality content reach millions of users online across the country.
To make the content more authentic and increase its reach, Star India has partnered with some of the best storytellers in the country including Shekhar Kapur, Neeraj Pandey, Kabir Khan, Nikkhil Advani, Ram Madhvani, Venkat Prabhu, Sudhir Mishra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nagesh Kukunoor, Mahesh Manjrekar, Vishal Furia, Rohan Sippy, Debbie Rao, Sharad Devarajan, and Salman Khan.
The original content will be available in seven different languages including Hindi and a few other regional languages. And will start rolling out in the upcoming months.
Here’s what Sanjay Gupta, the MD of Star India had to say on the launch of Hotstar Specials-
“With the mobile phone leading an explosion in the number of screens in the country, we feel that our content also needs to reinvent and boldly move forward. With Hotstar Specials we hope to create the biggest Indian stories delivered to a billion screens. To bring this vision alive, we are proud to partner with a stellar line up of talent who are headlining our first set of Hotstar Specials”
Editor’s Note: Hotstar has tried its hand with originals briefly in the past with some Indian standup comedians, but this will be the first serious concentrated effort. While it has managed to get exclusive access to many of the western sitcoms, especially HBO-owned content, the major USP of Hotstar has been its Sports offering with the likes of IPL (Cricket), PKL (Kabaddi), iLeague and EPL (Football). With Hotstar Specials, Star India will be able to strengthen its hold on Indian general entertainment which it terribly lacks at present.
