2019 will be the year of foldable phones and no one wants to be left behind. That includes Xiaomi too which will be soon revealing its own take on the growing trend. However, today, through a social media post, the company has given us an early look at a working prototype and it’s unlike what you have seen before.
The foldable phone, which is yet to be named, has been demoed by Xiaomi’s co-founder and President Lin Bin in the preview and instead of the usual fold in the between, the company has taken a rather unique approach. The screen doesn’t have a seam in the middle and folds from the left and right edges. The sides can be wrapped around on the back to turn the device into a large tablet or a compact phone which resembles Samsung’s now-defunct Edge series.
Unlike what Samsung and Royole have shown before, Xiaomi also seems to have made impressive progress with software compatibility. In the video, Bin launches the TikTok app in the tablet mode and when he folds the screen, it took only a second to adapt to the smaller resolution. Although Xiaomi switches to a different camera angle during recording, so it might not be as seamless as it seems. Apart from that, we don’t know much about the phone’s hardware other than the fact that the power key is situated at the top.
“Xiaomi double folding mobile phone is coming! After conquering a series of technical problems such as flexible folding screen technology, four-wheel drive folding shaft technology, flexible cover technology, and MIUI adaptation, we made the first folding screen mobile phone, which should be the world’s first double folding mobile phone.”, added Lin Bin further in the post.
While not yet confirmed, Xiaomi might introduce or at least, reveal more details at its forthcoming Mobile World Congress event on February 24th.
