At the ongoing IFA 2019 conference in Berlin, Sony has announced a new smartphone, the Xperia 5, expanding its existing lineup of flagship smartphones. And, adding to the list of a slew of devices announced at the event. Sony says the Xperia 5 packs key features of Xperia 1 and brings along technologies from the professional broadcasting and cinematography businesses into a sleek and compact design. So, lets’ dive in and look at some of these features in details.

Sony Xperia 5 Design

The Xperia 5 features a sleek-and-compact body design that comes in at 68mm wide, and a variety of color options: Blue, Red, Black, and Grey. It has a Gorilla Glass 6 protection on the front and the back and a metal frame around the body to offer protection against drops and scratches. The company says that despite offering a 21:9 CinemaWide display a lot of features from the Xperia 1, the phone still manages to be 14 grams lighter than Xperia 1, making it pocket-friendly.


On to the front, the phone comes with a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED CinemaWide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio, DCI-P3 color gamut, and 10-bit tonal gradation for offering a wide color-range, deeper blacks, and more natural colors. Additionally, it also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on top to protect the display against drops and scratches.


At its core, the Xperia 5 has a 7nm Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with Adreno 640 GPU running under the hood, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (expandable up to 512GB with microSD card). It runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box and includes a relatively smaller 3140mAh battery, which comes with Xperia Adaptive Charging technology and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) fast charging.

For optics, the phone sports a triple-camera setup on the rear, with a 12MP primary, Exmor RS sensor with f/1.6 aperture, Hybrid OIS/EIS, and 1.4μm pixel size, a 12MP secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture and 135° ultra-wide angle, and a third 12MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, Hybrid OIS/EIS, 2x optical zoom, and 960 fps Super slow motion, with LED flash. On the front, it has an 8MP camera with Exmor RS sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and 1.12μm pixel size.


The Xperia 5 offers a bunch of additional features, which include USB Type-C audio, stereo speaker, LDAC, Dolby Atmos, and side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It also comes with 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz) MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and USB 3.1 Type-C, for connectivity.

Sony Xperia 5 Price and Availability

The Sony Xperia 5 is priced at £699 (~ USD 860 / Rs 61,616) and will be available starting October. Pre-orders for the phone will start next week in select markets across Europe and will come bundled with Sony’s truly-wireless WF-1000XM3 noise-canceling headphones. Sony has virtually exited some markets like India, so we don’t really expect the Xperia 5 to launch in this country.
