Vivo NEX 3 with Snapdragon 855 Plus and Waterfall Screen Announced
After a series of leaks and rumors, Vivo has today announced the much-anticipated Vivo NEX 3 and NEX 3 5G smartphones in China. As already hinted by a few leaked images and specifications, the phone does feature a ‘Waterfall FullView’ AMOLED display, which is a custom-made display, and according to the company offers a 99.6% screen-to-body ratio.
Vivo NEX 3: Design and Display
The Vivo NEX 3 features a 6.89-inch full HD curved AMOLED display with 2256 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and HDR 10. Vivo calls this, ‘Waterfall FullView’ display and claims it offers a 99.6% screen-to-body ratio. The interesting thing about the display is that it extends all the way to the edges to give a bigger screen estate to enjoy content on the phone. However, there is a downside to this. Since the display extends to the sides, it takes away the space to accommodate the physical buttons. So, to deal with this, Vivo has used virtual buttons, called ‘Touch Sense’ which work alongside the haptic feedback system.
Vivo NEX 3: Performance
At its core, the NEX 3 (both 4G and 5G variant) comes with a 7nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor with Adreno 640 GPU running under the hood, paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. It runs on Funtouch OS 9.1 based on Android 9.0 Pie and has a 4500mAh battery with 44W fast charging.
Vivo NEX 3: Camera
For optics, the NEX 3 sports a triple camera setup on its rear in a circular ‘Lunar Ring’ module design, with a 64MP Samsung GW1 primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 13MP ultrawide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a 13MP telephoto sensor with f/2.4 aperture, with LED flash.
On the front, it has a 16MP pop-up selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash, for selfies. The pop-up camera design allows the phone to extend its display to the edges and achieve a 99.6% screen-to-body ratio.
Vivo NEX 3: Miscellaneous
The Nex 3 5G packs Qualcomm’s X50 modem to offer improved network performance, and also includes six 5G antennas to offer better connectivity. Other hardware specifications for the phone include an in-display fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm audio jack, Hi-Fi DAC, USB Type-C, and NFC.
Vivo NEX 3: Pricing and Availability
The Vivo NEX 3 4G with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at 4998 yuan (~ US$ 707 / INR 50,633), whereas, the 5G versions with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and 12GB RAM and 256GB storage are priced at 5698 yuan (~ US$ 806 / INR 57,729) and 6198 yuan (~ US$ 876 / INR 62,795) respectively.
