At its special Screen Technology event in Shenzhen, OnePlus has unveiled its 120Hz OLED display with Quad HD+ resolution, HDR, and MEMC. As per the company, the new technology can be seen in its upcoming flagship smartphones, starting with the OnePlus 8 Pro, expected to launch sometime in the second quarter this year. That said, let’s dive in and look at more details about OnePlus’ latest screen technology.
As already mentioned, the upcoming flagship smartphones from OnePlus will feature an OLED screen with Quad HD+ resolution, 10-bit HDR, and the most interesting, 120Hz refresh rate with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The company says each of its screens is calibrated to accurate colors with an RGB color temperature sensor with a <0.8 JNCD (Just Noticeable Color Difference) rating. Further, it also suggests that the new technology offers a 4096-level automatic brightness level (over the current 1024-level), which is the highest in Android smartphones.
Besides this, the display also features a built-in MEMC motion chip, as can be seen on some of the newer televisions. Essentially, MEMC is a form of video processing used to compensate for motion blur and offer smoother animations. Apart from this, the display also comes with the multi-scene auto-dimming, ambient light sensor, and screen color temperature dimming, among other things.
During the announcement, OnePlus shared that it managed to achieve 77% of the domestic sales of 90Hz refresh rate phones in the online market. And to offer a detailed look at the screen response times from different manufacturers, it also shared a comparison chart, which suggests that the company’s latest screen technology offers a better response time than other displays in the market.
As of now, OnePlus has not revealed any definitive timeline for when we can begin to see the latest 120Hz OLED panels on its smartphones. However, we can expect to see the new display technology on the company’s upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone, which is expected to arrive sometime in the second quarter this year. Interestingly, Samsung’s S20 series is also tipped to come with a 120Hz OLED display later this year.
