Poco’s X series has a reputation for offering powerfully specced smartphones at surprisingly affordable prices. They may lack the bells and whistles of some others, but when it comes to power, these are pretty much in the Hulk category, making them extremely popular among those who seek performance on a relatively tight budget. The latest addition in the lineup, the Poco X8 Pro Max, also comes with plenty of power, not just in terms of processor, but also in the form of battery life, which, let us tell you right upfront, is the best we have used on any smartphone in a long, long time. All at a starting price of Rs. 42,999. Does this power-packed Poco pack enough of a punch to knock out the competition?

Poco X8 Pro Max Design and appearance: Smart, without being fancy

Its design is one of the ‘plain’ aspects of the Poco X8 Pro Max. The phone has a very basic design and does not bring the exceptional ‘flair’ that many associate with other Poco devices – there is nothing “made of mad” here. The front is simple and clean – it comes with a tall display surrounded by razor-thin bezels, with a tiny dot in the middle on the top of the display for the front-facing camera.

Flip the phone around, and one gets a very industrial iPhone 17 vibe. There is a vertical, capsule-shaped, and slightly raised camera unit on the left side of the back. Hidden in the camera unit are RGB lights, but these are camouflaged quite well and blend seamlessly with the black of the camera unit of the phone. The Poco X8 Pro Max comes in three color variants: Blue, Black, and White. We received the blue version, which is very light, pastel blue. It is pleasant and does not scream for attention. It comes with a very subtle logo, placed vertically near the base on the left. The back is fiberglass with a matte finish, which almost looks and feels like metal, and does a good job at keeping fingerprints and light scratches at bay.

Keeping up with recent trends, Poco has given the X8 Pro Max flat sides, with an aluminum frame that not only reinforces its solid build, but also feels a lot like an iPhone. The left side of the frame is bare while the right houses the volume rocker and the power/lock button. There is a speaker grille on the top and also on the base, residing alongside the SIM card tray and USB Type-C port. The phone is large, being 162.9 mm tall and 77.9 mm wide, but is not uncomfortably so, and is reasonably slim at 8.2 mm, although slightly heavy at 218 grams (mind you, it is light when you consider the size of the battery inside it). It is very much a two-hand-requiring phone, but it has a reassuringly solid feel to it, too. The display comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection, and an IP69 rating means the phone will easily survive a fall in the water. Poco has also provided a case in the box.

Poco X8 Pro Max Specs: A powerful chip and charge game!

The Poco X8 Pro Max packs some impressive specs, as befits a member of the Poco X series. The phone comes with a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 3,500 nits peak brightness. Powering the phone is a flagship-level MediaTek Dimensity 9500s (3nm) paired with speedy 12 GB LPDDRX5 RAM. The phone has two storage variants, 256 GB and 512 GB, and comes with UFS 4.1 storage.

The phone has a dual camera set up on the back featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS and an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, while selfies are handled by a 20-megapixel camera on the front. It also packs in a monstrous 9000 mAh battery, which comes with not only 100W charging speed (and a charger) but also the ability to charge other devices at 27W. Apart from 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, the phone comes with NFC and infrared connectivity, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. The Poco X8 Pro Max runs on Android 16 topped with HyperOS 3. This is a spec sheet designed for performance, especially on the chip and battery fronts.

Poco X8 Pro Max Performance: Multimedia beast with RGB light touch!

poco x8 pro max performance

The Poco X8 Pro Max’s combination of a flagship-level processor, speedy RAM, and storage allows the phone to handle basically anything without really straining. Everyday tasks like scrolling, multitasking, jumping from one app to another, messaging, casual games, and web browsing all flow smoothly on the device. The story remains the same in high-end gaming territory as well. We played BGMI and COD: Mobile on it, and the phone managed the two titles with ease as well, maintaining its cool even when it is pushed a fair bit. It does get slightly warm, but never to an alarming level. The phone also manages video editing like a boss.

The display on the phone is quite vibrant and bright, which, when paired with stereo speakers, makes it a prime device for content consumption. There is support for HDR on platforms like YouTube and Netflix, and the display also offers Dolby Vision support. We enjoyed watching Netflix, long-form YouTube videos on the phone, with the speakers delivering impressively loud audio output with a good body for a smartphone. The in-display fingerprint scanner is swift to unlock the phone, and call quality is very good too – we did not face any call drop issues.

poco x8 pro max specs

The Poco M8 Pro Max comes with Android 16, with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 on top of it, and an assurance of four years of Android and 6 years of security updates. While the UI is intuitive, there are a number of third-party apps pre-installed on the phone, which can be uninstalled but definitely clutter up the experience. The UI is laced with a number of AI features that go beyond the basics, like Circle to Search and AI Erase. It comes with AI image enhancement that improves the clarity of your phone, AI Sky replacement, AI Image Expansion, and more. Overall, the interface feels fluid as long as you can ignore the bloatware or just sit down and remove it all.

In a neat touch, the phone has RGB backlights around the two cameras on the back. These are turned off by default, but you can dive into settings and turn them on. They can be used to highlight incoming calls, for camera timers, gaming light effects, or for rhythmic light effects while using apps like YouTube Music, Spotify, and Poco’s native Music app. It is a handy indicator when it comes to notifications, especially if you keep your face down, but we would have liked it to be more accessible.

All in all, the Poco X8 Pro Max is one of the best-performing smartphones in its segment, capable of handling everything you throw at it. The RGB lights add a nice whimsical touch to a very solid device.

Poco X8 Pro Max Cameras: Main camera phone

poco x8 pro max camera review

Cameras have never been the forte of the X series, and unfortunately, this is true of the X8 Pro Max as well. The main camera is the star of a rather limited camera show. It captures a good amount of detail in daylight conditions, but the colors tend to be a tad oversaturated, delivering warmer and exaggerated tones. The portrait mode works well mostly, although the bokeh it produces sometimes feels a bit artificial. The interface allows one to switch between two focal lengths, which is handy, and the 2x zoom works well and is quick to focus, even when we used it to take macro shots.

Low-light performance of the main sensor is impressive, retaining a good amount of detail even in low light, even though the photos do end up with a slight yellow tint in an attempt to make the most of the light at its disposal. There are a number of shooting options and modes, including Pro, Dual video, and Documents.

The ultrawide camera delivers similar colors to the main sensor, but details do take a dip. The front-facing camera captured skin texture and details well, but unlike the main sensor, which has a tendency to oversaturate, it made our complexion look a little washed out, although this can be changed by using filters and modes. The main camera is capable of taking 4K videos at up to 60 fps, while the front-facing camera can capture 1080p videos at up to 60 fps. The video quality in both well-lit and low-light conditions is decent, as long as you stick to the main sensor. And that is actually the photo story of the Poco X8 Pro Max: it has three cameras, but it is really a one-camera phone for those who want good results.

Poco X8 Pro Max Battery and charging: Regular long lifer, that can double up as a powerbank

One of the biggest USPs of the Poco X8 Pro Max is its battery. It comes with a massive 9000 mAh battery, which is surprising given the size and weight of the phone. These very impressive numbers translate into an equally impressive performance. The phone saw us through nearly two days of regular usage, which is no easy feat, given that we pushed the phone quite a bit through these two days with long gaming and even longer doomscrolling sessions, along with patches of OTT viewing. We are reasonably sure that the phone can easily see you through to a third day on a single charge, if used with care.

The 100W charger helps the phone get back on its feet pretty swiftly, too. The phone gets up to 50 percent in nearly 30 minutes and takes about an hour and 30 minutes to go from zero to full charge, which is very impressive given the size of the battery. As if that were not enough, the phone also comes with the ability to charge other devices, and that too at a very brisk 27W, allowing it to double up as a very capable powerbank!

Poco X8 Pro Max Review Verdict: Perfect for those who seek power

The Poco X8 Pro Max carries the legacy of its predecessor forward by offering a spec and price combination that is very competitive. The phone is available in two variants: 12 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM is priced at Rs. 42,999, while the 12 GB RAM + 512 GB ROM version is priced at Rs. 46,999. Though these are higher than the prices of the X7 series, the phone comes at a time when memory costs are driving up prices, which is why we think that these are extremely competitive prices, considering what the Poco X8 Pro Max delivers.

poco x8 pro max review verdict

The phone is easily one of the best smartphones we have used in the price segment in terms of performance, and the best when it comes to battery life. In fact, it is a great phone for anyone unless they are totally obsessed with design and/or camera performance. We expect to see a lot of gaming enthusiasts lining up for it – the RGB lighting on the back helps! It does face competition from the likes of the powerfully specced OnePlus 15R, the more camera-centric and eye-catching Nothing Phone 4a Pro, and the solidly performing iQOO 15R, but if one is seeking a phone that simply goes on and on, even while cutting no performance corners, the Poco X8 Pro Max might just be the device for you.
