iPhone 5 is here, alright, even if I didn’t believe right until I saw that 5 shadow on their announcement that they’ll decide to go with that name. What surprised me a few minutes ago as I was following the event live was the fact that they announced the iPhone to be “world’s thinnest smartphone”. Wait, what? From what I know, the iPhone 5 is not the world’s thinnest smartphone because that title already belongs to a smartphone from, ummm, China.

Oppo Finder, world’s thinnest smartphone, not iPhone 5!

The sixth-generation of the iPhone is only 7.6 mm thin, but that is 1.05 mm thicker than Oppo Finder, world’s truly thinnest smartphone! Have a look at the video below and see for yourself.

This is quite a mistake done by Apple and I’m really curious to see whether the consumers will notice this. And if you believe Oppo Finder is just some sort of a cheap Chinese clone, think again, because this Eastern baby comes with a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus Screen, 1.5 Ghz dual-core processor, 8 MP rear camera, 1GB of ROM. Currently, the phone retails for $479.

What’s even more interesting is that there are more smartphones that are thinner than the iPhone 5, and that’s besides the Oppo Finder. While in Barcelona at the MWC, I had the chance to play around with the Huawei Ascend P1 S, which is only 6.68 mm thin, that’s almost as thin as the Oppo Finder! Add to that Motorola’s Droid Razr, which Googorola also used to brand as the thinnest 4G Android smartphone! I would’ve understood that Apple might not have heard about the Oppo Finder, but what about these two smartphones that come from big names in the industry?

Oh Apple, you made a boo-boo!

Update: Gabriel Proulx makes a good point about humps and bumps in these phones. But Oppo Finder is just 7.1mm thick even at its thickest point. Surprisingly, a Chinese website had put up the comparison pics almost a week back. iPhone 5 is truly the most leaked iPhone ever!

  1. This claim is based on the fact that the iPhone 5 is thinnest all-around. The camera bump on the Oppo Finder and all other phones mentioned in this article are greater that 7.6mm (I used a little image editing and extrapolate judging by the width of the rest of the Oppo Finder a couple weeks when pondering this very question). Phones dimensions need to be judged at their thickest point. This not only makes logical sense (otherwise you could make a phone that tapers to 1mm and call it the thinnest phone), but it is also what the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority ruled regarding the iPhone 4 being the thinnest phone at the time even though the Samsung Galaxy S was generally thinner, except for it’s hump.

So, in summary. The iPhone 5’s thickest point is thinner than the Oppo Finder’s thickest point. Therefore it is a valid claim. Some people may debate and say that humps and camera bumps shouldn’t count, but that ends up being a matter of opinion. At the end of the day, if there was a 7.61mm crack you needed to slide a phone through, only one phone would make it, and that is the point they are making.

      • Thanks for the reply. I’ve seen a couple sites through out that 7.1mm figure as the thickest point, but it doesn’t add up. I again took a promotional profile shot of the Finder, zoomed in, and did some generous measuring in Oppo’s favor. I ended up with at least 7.85mm, but it is likely more. Even looking at that Chinese site with the comparison photos shows that the iPhone 5 is thinner than the Finder’s bump. Check out http://fashion.pconline.com.cn/article_group/147774.html and zoom in. Measure it. In fact the Stratagy Analytics site posted by the author in another reply states that the “Oppo Finder phone is hiding a significant camera bump which probably makes it thicker than 7.6mm.”

As for the Huawei Ascend P1 S, it is listed as 6.68mm, but has a camera bump, and a chin. Again there are no published specs from the company, and it appears no one has measured it and posted the figures. So zooming in on a promotional profile picture, I measured approximately 8.29mm at the chin.

As for the Droid RAZR which is listed at 7.1mm? Several sites put the hump at the top at 11.1mm. I didn’t bother measuring that one.

The Fujitsu ARROWS ES IS12F mentioned in the Strategy Analytics post is a wedge that tapers from 8.5mm to 6.7mm.

The Pantech Vega S5 is quoted at several sites to be 6.89mm and the hump doesn’t look to be too significant. My preliminary measurements put it at around 7.33mm. So this one really stumped me, especially because it doesn’t look that thin. So I ended up going straight to the source. Pantech’s own website lists the thickness as 9mm. All those sites reporting 6.89mm were in July and must have originated from a typo or misinformation somewhere.

There was also a leak of a ZTE Athena at 6.2mm in May, however, nothing has been heard since to my knowledge. Additionally, the leaked photo appears to show a chin on the back, which is characteristic of other ZTE phones I’ve seen. So, we will have to see when that actually gets released, but I’m not holding my breath.

        In summary:
        iPhone 5: 7.6mm
        Oppo Finder: Approx. 7.85mm
        Huawei Ascend P1 S: Approx. 8.29mm
        Fujitsu ARROWS ES IS12F: 8.5mm
        Pantech Vega S5: 9mm

    • I agree. iPhone 5 is thinnest all round at 7.6mm. The Oppo Finder aka cheap iPhone 1 clone… is 8.1mm at thickest point.

    • And what about Motorola Droid RAZR and Huawei Ascend P1 S? I’m pretty sure there is one more phone thinner than 7.6mm. I don’t remember its name though.

  2. I think that apelle company wanted to say that they made thinnest iphone ever or something like that and really does it matter it is just fucking 5mm for god’s sake imagine a girl fighting over a thing that her boyfriend has bigger thing for 0.5mm yeah i don’t think so 😀

  3. When the Iphone 5 is released on 9/21/12 it will be the thinnest available smartphone based on the thickest point, even compared to the Oppo Finder which is the only one mentioned that is currently available

Please explain how they were wrong?? Are you saying they need to consider all future phones when making the thinnest smartphone claim?
