After teasing the device for the past few days, Xiaomi has today officially launched the Redmi 8 smartphone in India. The Redmi 8 is an entry-level smartphone, and a successor to the Redmi 7 launched earlier this year. A few weeks back, the company also launched the Redmi 8A, which is a successor to 7A and starts at Rs 6,499. Xiaomi is touting the Redmi 8 as a ‘Battery. Camera. Action.’ device, which hints towards a bigger battery with improved camera and hardware.

Xiaomi Redmi 8: Design and Display

In terms of design, the Redmi 8 features an Aurora Mirror design, which reflects light falling off it at different angles. It comes in three color options: Sapphire Blue, Ruby Red, and Onyx Black.

Towards the front, it has a 6.22-inch HD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, 1520×720 pixels screen resolution, and a dot notch housing the front camera. Further, to offer protection, the phone comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top, along with the P2i splash-proof coating.

Xiaomi Redmi 8: Performance

At its core, the Redmi 8 comes with a 12nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor with Adreno 505 GPU, paired with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage (expandable up to 512GB with microSD card). It runs on Android 9 Pie with MIUI out of the box and has a massive 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging to power everything.

The phone has a fingerprint scanner on the rear to offer an alternate method of security, in addition to Face Unlock. Furthermore, the Redmi 8 also comes with USB Type-C, dual SIM with a dedicated microSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack, wireless FM radio, IR blaster, and more.

Xiaomi Redmi 8: Camera

For optics, the Redmi 8 sports an AI dual-camera setup on the rear, which includes a 12MP Sony IMX363 primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 1.4μm pixel size and a 2MP depth sensor, and LED flash.

Additionally, the camera comes with Google Lens (with support for up to 104 languages) and AI scene detection that can recognize up to 33 categories (including 6 India-specific categories). On the front, the phone comes with an 8MP AI selfie camera for selfies and Face Unlock.

Xiaomi Redmi 8: Pricing and Availability

The Remi 8 comes in two configurations: 3GB + 32GB and 4G + 64GB, and is priced at Rs 7,999 and Rs 8,999 respectively. It will go on sale in India starting October 12 on mi.com, Mi Home stores, and Flipkart. As a special gift to the Mi Fans, the company will be offering the 4GB + 64GB variant for a price of Rs 7,999 for its first 5 million units.
