The Global Smartphone Market Has Declined for the Straight Ninth Quarter, but Apple Once Again Increased Its Sales. This Time by 10%

According to the report by Counterpoint, which researches the market share of smartphones, the global smartphone market has declined for the ninth consecutive quarter, dropping by 8%. On the other hand, Apple and Huawei have increased their market share by 10% and 23%, respectively. In the same period, major Android brands, including Samsung, fell 1% during the same time, while other brands also saw declines; Oppo fell 10%, Xiaomi fell 17%, and Vivo fell 19% globally.

Apple iPhone Sales Rise as Android Slows

Counterpoint hasn’t mentioned any concrete reason for the increase in iPhone sales. However, it does mention that due to RAM and memory price increases, Android smartphones are largely affected, which is evident in their sales.

Apple, on the other hand, hadn’t increased the price of its phones. However, Tim Cook very recently announced that Apple might increase its prices soon, as we reported in the previous tech brief.

iPhone Users in the EU Can Now Install Apps Through Third-Party App Stores

Apple Opens iPhone App Stores

Apple is now letting users install apps through third-party app stores after allowing it in the EU and Japan. The changes are part of Apple’s agreement with CADE, Brazil’s competition regulator.

The Big Picture:
Apple says this functionality will arrive in iOS 26.5. When it arrives, users can download and officially install their apps through third-party app store developers. Developers can start distributing their apps through these third-party app stores as well. Along with that, Apple is also integrating third-party payments in the App Store and changing the fees for developers.

If you are a developer, you can see all the rules here. Apps distributed outside the App Store must also go through Apple’s process.

Compared to Android, Apple is very strict about sideloading apps from third-party app stores. This change is a significant benefit for users by providing various options, and it is also a big win for developers.

Apple and Intel Have Reportedly Agreed to Work Together on US-Based Chip Manufacturing for Future Apple Devices

Apple and Intel Team Up for U.S. Chip Manufacturing

Apple and Intel’s deal is now official. President Donald Trump officially announced it on his Truth Social media. As part of the deal, Intel will now manufacture some Apple chips using its American fabrication sites. Apple is heavily dependent upon TSMC chip manufacturing to manufacture its silicon. Now, the U.S. government wants to change that and rely on its own country’s capabilities. This is part of the reason the government is pushing the deal between Apple and Intel.

Currently, there is no information on which processors Apple and Intel are partnering to build together. However, as per the report, Intel will first build the legacy processors for the iPhone, iPads, and Macs. If this is successful, Apple will ramp up production in 2027.

Using Intel as an alternative also frees up TSMC resources, which are already struggling to keep up with the high demand.

Midjourney Has Announced an MRI Scanner

Wait, what? And before you think I am out of my mind: yes, Midjourney, the text-to-image generator company, as most of us know, has built and announced an MRI scanner. The company is leveraging its technology to build AI hardware that converts data into an image. The people behind this have decided it will first be used in a medical product, and it is an MRI scanner.

First, the product will be called the Midjourney Scanner, and it is a part of Midjourney Medical products. We are not sure how many wild products are still in the works.

The Big Picture:
The new scanner uses ultrasonic sound waves and claims it can scan the entire internal body in under 60 seconds, whereas current MRI scanners take about 60-90 minutes. Midjourney says the scanner can create a 3D map of the body, including internal body composition, with image quality comparable to MRI-like scans

Midjourney plans to open its first Midjourney Spa in San Francisco in 2027, where the product will be available in public spas where users can get full-body scans in under 60 seconds. However, it is currently not focusing on medical replacement, as that would require stricter FDA approvals. Midjourney says that over the next 12 months, it will refine the current scanner that was announced.

I still cannot believe that this announcement is real. An AI image generator has decided to create an MRI scanner, which is one of the wildest AI product announcements from that company that I have ever seen. On the other side of the coin, this isn’t surprising at all, considering Midjourney is already very good at converting data into images, unlike any other AI product that can only answer your questions without screens. We should see how this will actually be effective in the coming days, as the product will initially be available to the public in 2027.

Adobe Adds AI Assistance to Its Creative Cloud Apps

Adobe Adds AI Assistants to Creative Cloud

Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite of apps, like Premiere Pro and others, is getting a helpful AI assistant to help finish some tasks. The AI assistant will have a chatbot-like experience similar to ChatGPT, where you can describe the changes you need, and the AI assistant will do it for you. Its capabilities are different depending on the application you are using. Adobe has detailed what the AI assistant can do for each application.

In Premiere, the AI Assistant can sort assets into bins, rename clips in batches, identify questions or keywords in recorded speech, add markers to the timeline, create a starting point for a video edit, and more.

In Photoshop, the AI assistant can help organize layers, switch backgrounds, resize assets for different platforms, and more.

In Illustrator, the assistant can help in handling multi-step production tasks, including checking color mode errors, finding missing fonts, reorganizing layers, creating multiple design versions from a spreadsheet or document, and more.

In InDesign, Adobe says an AI assistant can help in running print-readiness checks and apply copy or style changes across page layouts

In Frame.io, the assistant can now organize shoot assets, generate B-roll, and more.

The new AI Extend is currently available in beta for all the apps, but for After Effects, it is only available on the private beta.

Upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gen 6 to Come in Different Variants

Snapdragon Elite Gen 6 May Come in Six Variants

According to the latest report, the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gen 6 is going to come in six different variants. According to the report, to mitigate high component costs, Qualcomm is offering the Elite processor in six different variants.

The Big Picture:
As per reports, the three variants will feature the latest LPDDR6X RAM, and the other three will feature LPDDR5X RAM. Due to the component price increase, LPDDR6X RAM is going to be expensive, so now brands will have the flexibility to settle for the low-cost LPDDR6X variant.

Android phones are already suffering from high price increases, and it is evident in the sales numbers. Considering the rising memory costs, we expect that most phones will choose the low-end variants, while the ultra-premium flagships will use the high-end series with a high price tag.
Currently, the biggest differentiation between the upcoming variants is the RAM configuration. We should know full details in the coming weeks, as Qualcomm will officially reveal its flagship processor in October.
