If the person has enabled the online status, you can check the recent and live activity. WhatsApp also allows users to disable specific parts or all of the statuses, including last seen, online status, and more. If the person has disabled that, you will see a blank screen without any indications.

How to check if someone is online on WhatsApp:

• Save the contact on your phone.
• Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
• Go to the contact, and at the top, you can see the last seen or online status if the person has enabled the online activity.

The active now represents the person who is currently online, and if you see active a few minutes ago, it indicates that they were active recently. If you don’t see any status or activity, they might have disabled the online activity.

To view someone’s online activity, first, you have to ensure that online activity is enabled on your device. To enable activity status, open the Instagram app, tap on your profile picture, and click on the hamburger menu in the right corner of the screen. Tap on the Messages and Story Replies option, then select and enable ‘Show activity status.’

Also, pay attention to the green and blue bubble messaging system. If you see their messages in blue, this indicates the person is connected to the internet and replying through an internet connection. On the other hand, if the messages you send are replied to in green, this indicates the person is offline and is replying to you through the SMS or MMS connection.

Telegram

Since Telegram also shares a significant market share globally, you can also use Telegram messaging apps to determine if someone is online on your iPhone. Similar to the other messaging apps, it requires someone to have an active Telegram account and also last seen to be enabled on their Telegram account.

Using Snapchat

Considering Snapchat users are more active than any other social network users, you can also use the Snapchat app to determine if someone is online on your iPhone.

Snapchat works differently and also doesn’t have a built-in online status indicator to tell if someone is active. However, you can use a very similar feature, Snap Map, to determine if someone is online.

Similar to other messaging apps, Snapchat also has some built-in privacy controls to disable all activities for their privacy, and both users should mutually follow each other to check live location and status.

If the person has enabled Snap Map, you can open Snapchat and tap the screen to access Snap Map and locate their profile, commonly referred to as Bitmoji, on the map. It also has a time indicator, such as just now or five minutes ago.

You can also find other clues like status. You can send a snap or a chat message, and if you see a label called Opened, it indicates they have opened your message, showing they are online.

This way, you can determine if someone is active on Snapchat or not. However, as mentioned below, it also comes with limitations like Ghost Mode. If they enable Ghost Mode, their location will be completely hidden. They can also select location sharing (e.g., share location with specific people only) and even hide stories from you, even if you are mutual friends on Snapchat.

Use Find My Location

If you want to find out if your child is online or someone in your family, you can use Apple’s built-in Find My network, which allows you to track your Apple devices and also lets you share live locations with other contacts. While Apple Find My doesn’t have a direct online status, it enables you to see the last active location to let you know if your device is connected to the internet.

Please note this doesn’t mean the person is online, but it enables you to determine whether the device is connected to the internet.

To use Find My, both you and the other person must be signed in with Apple IDs. The person must also share the live location with you. You can also use Family Share to link your child or other device with your Apple account and share live locations.

To check, open the Find My app on your iPhone and navigate to People at the bottom of the screen. Here, you can find the person’s name in your contacts. Remember that the person should have mutual consent to share their location. Tap on their name to see their current live location and last active time to let you know that they are online.

These methods also have limitations, like the user should be active on these platforms and also should have online activity status enabled, which makes it hard to track if someone is online.

You can also use other methods like calling them using your smartphone, checking recipient and delivery confirmation through emails, or using collaboration tools. Additionally, gaming platforms can be used to check if someone is online and gaming.

If these methods work, you can easily track someone online. You can also find someone’s online activity using various social media platforms and the updates posted on them. If you are a parent, you can use apps like Qustodio to know and track your child’s location. Still, unfortunately, these apps don’t let you see the user’s real-time online status.

Overall, there is no straightforward way to check someone’s online status on iPhone. Currently, no smartphone, including Android and iPhones, offers a built-in online status feature. However, you can rely on the most popular third-party apps to check the online status of the user.
