Universal Clipboard is one of the most useful and handy features if you are in the Apple ecosystem. It lets you easily copy and paste text and other files between devices without requiring any additional setup or third-party apps. Universal Clipboard is one of my favorite and most frequently used features, and I miss it every time I switch to an Android smartphone.

Fortunately, if you don’t have an iPhone or are using an Android phone alongside your Mac, you can get this feature on these devices too. Since it is not from Apple, the experience is not as seamless as the Apple ecosystem, but it does get the job done.

If you are really looking for an alternative, there are plenty of methods that let you copy and paste text between your Android phone and Mac. I have been testing them for the last few weeks, and here is what I like and don’t like, and here is what I recommend for everyone.

Use KDE Connect to Share Clipboard & Files Between Android and Mac

Out of all the methods that I have tested, KDE Connect is my go-to tool for sharing clipboard content between Mac and Android. KDE is an open-source software developed by the community. It means it is free to use.

You can easily share and sync clipboard content between your devices, plus it also offers additional features such as file transfer, notification sync, device sync, and sharing files instantly, replicating your Mac and iPhone experience.

Since KDE Connect is a third-party app, there are some limitations when it comes to copying content from Android to Mac. When copying text from Android to Mac, you have to go through an extra manual step to sync your content.

Due to the Android system restrictions, after you copy something on your Android, whether it is text or any link, you must manually tap the send button to copy and paste it to your Mac, and you have to do this every time you try to share content to your Mac.

On the other hand, copying content from the Mac to Android works flawlessly without any manual actions; you can immediately copy the text, and it is automatically sent to the Android with no extra steps.

You can just press the text and paste it on your Android from your Mac. Also, for this feature to work, both your Mac and your Android should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Apart from this minor inconvenience when sharing content from your Android to your Mac, my experience with KDE Connect so far has been great, and it’s flawless.

KDE not only offers the universal clipboard, but it also comes with other useful tools like file sharing, notification sync, replying to SMS, controlling media, sending links, and triggering custom scripts for your smartphone, replicating the entire Apple ecosystem between your Mac and Android device.

To use KDE Connect between your Mac and Android, you need to set it up. Don’t worry, even though it is open-source, the setup is extremely easy, even for beginners.

  • First, you need Soduto on your Mac You can install and download it for free from the official site soduto.com.
    download soduto
  • Next, download and install the free KDE Connect app on your Android. It is available officially from the Google Play Store.
download kde connect app from google play store
  • Once you have installed the app, open it and give it the necessary permission to run.
  • Connect your Mac and Android to the same Wi-Fi network and ensure they are running on the same Wi-Fi network.
ensure both devices are connected to the same wi-fi network
  • Once you are done, open the Soduto app on your Mac and the KDE Connect app on your Android simultaneously. Now, go through the initial steps on the app and click on continue on the Soduto app on your Mac.
  • Next, the Android app automatically discovers your Mac on your network while setting up the side offer. Click on continue, and now click on the Add or Pair option.
  • When your Android smartphone detects the connection, click on Pair Now.
  • On your Android, open the KDE Connect app and accept the pairing request. Once you have done this, the devices will be connected securely.
  • Once connected, open the KDE Connect app on your smartphone. Click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the screen, and click on Plugin settings.
turn on clipboard sync in kde connect app
  • Now select or disable the features you need or don’t want, and if you want to copy text between your Mac and your Android, ensure the clipboard sync feature is enabled.

Now, once both your Android and Mac are connected, to use the universal clipboard feature, simply copy the text or a link on your Mac, and the text will be automatically copied to your Android smartphone.

However, on Android, select the text you want to copy, pull down the notification bar, and click on Send to Clipboard. If you don’t see the notification, ensure the KDE Connect app is running in the background. You can also enable it for persistent notification, and also disable the battery optimization feature.

All the clipboard content will be transmitted locally on your device, both devices should be paired every time you need to use this feature. Unlike Apple’s universal clipboard feature, KDE Connect, as of now, only supports text and links, with no support for media.

Share Files Between Your Mac and Android Easily

You can also use KDE Connect to share files between Android and Mac, like an AirDrop alternative. Click on the Soduto icon in the menu bar, tap on the devices, select your device, and click on the Send File. Now select the files you want to share and click on the Open.

The files will be automatically saved to your download folder. You can also send files between Android and Mac. On your Android, locate the file and click on the share icon, select KDE Connect, and then choose your Mac as a destination, and it will be stored in your Mac’s download folder.

However, one thing that I have noticed in my recent two weeks of use of KDE Connect is that it often disconnects due to the aggressive battery optimization. To avoid this, before starting your work, ensure both of these devices are connected successfully to use this feature.

Universal Clipboard on Mac and Android

I have also tested other methods like the Copy Paste app and Clip Cloud. However, those require a manual copy and paste and also don’t work as KDE Connect, so after reviewing multiple options and multiple tests, KDE Connect still remains a choice for me and for you too, as the best alternative to the Apple universal clipboard for between Mac and Android devices.

If you are looking to store all your clipboard content in the cloud and want a cloud-based solution to copy and paste clipboard content anywhere from the net, you can prefer the other third-party options I mentioned. Those two allow you to save the copied content and work using the cloud, and let you store the clipboard content permanently within these apps. Windows users looking for similar clipboard sync functionality should check out these clipboard managers for Windows that support cross-device copying.

FAQs on Universal Clipboard for Mac and Android

1. Can I use KDE Connect when my Mac and Android are on different networks, or remotely (over the internet)?

KDE Connect only works if both devices are paired, meaning your Mac and your Android smartphone must be connected to the same local network. If you want to use or share clipboard content remotely or using the internet, you can try other free alternatives like Clip Cloud.

2. Is there any way to make Android-to-Mac clipboard sharing fully automatic, without the manual tap?

When copying text from Mac to Android, the process is as seamless and, in fact, even better than the Apple Universal Clipboard for KDE Connect, but due to the Android security and privacy policies, sharing the clipboard content from Android to Mac requires an extra manual step. You have to manually tap on the  Send Clipboard, and there is no way to automate this.

3. Does KDE Connect support syncing clipboard history or only the most recent item?

No, KDE Connect only saves and syncs the current clipboard content, which is the last text you have copied from the other devices. As of now, it doesn’t support any clipboard history. If you are looking for a clipboard history, you can try the alternatives that I have mentioned in the article.

4. What should I do if my Mac or Android isn’t discovering the other device, even when on the same Wi-Fi?

This is the most common issue faced by the majority of users. However, following some simple steps can easily resolve this issue. First, make sure both your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, which is required for this feature to work. During the initial steps, you have set up both devices to be paired and transfer the clipboard content. Ensure that both of these apps are running in the background. If you’re experiencing aggressive battery optimization on your system, the OS might shut down in the background, causing these issues. Also, if you are on a Mac, check that it has the necessary permissions in the system settings to work.

5. Are there any limitations or privacy concerns if multiple users/devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network?

KDE Connect only works when both devices have been paired. You cannot share or copy content, even if the other devices are on the same network. It also offers an option to remove if you have already been paired. To remove devices, you can go to your Mac, right-click on the device, and choose unpair/remove. You can also do this on Android. Go to the paired device, tap on the menu, and select the unpair option.
