Apple debuted its iPhone 8 and iPhone X smartphones last night. As expected, both the iPhones were powered by an in-house designed Apple A11 Bionic chip with neural engine added to the iPhone X. It is the successor to the A10 Fusion SoC found inside the last generation iPhone 7. It is clearly a marked improvement over the A10 Fusion; at least on paper. So here are some top Apple A11 Bionic features that help it edge past its predecessor. That said, the differences are a lot subtle when compared to the A10X Fusion chip found inside the iPad Pro and the new Apple TV 4K.

Hexa Core CPU

Apple has updated its A10 Fusion chip with the new A11 Bionic SoC in its iPhone lineup. It is by far the most powerful chip Apple has ever produced. The Apple A11 Bionic chip makes use of not one two but six cores. For the uninitiated, the A10 Fusion SoC came with four cores. The new chip is said to be 70% faster in terms of CPU performance when compared with its predecessor.

Improved Performance Controller

The hexa core Apple A11 Bionic features cores arranged in two clusters. It comprises of two performance cores that are supposedly 25% faster and four efficiency cores that are 70% faster as compared to the A10 Fusion. This backed by a new second generation Apple designed performance controller that can tackle all six cores simultaneously. This is a BIG deal.

Faster GPU with 60fps Graphics Rendering

The Apple A11 Bionic chip is using a GPU that has been developed in-house by Tim Cook and company. The all new SoC integrates the Apple designed GPU with a three-core design. This helps deliver up to 30 percent faster graphics performance as compared to its predecessor.

Extremely Power Efficient

Both the CPU and the GPU in the Apple A11 Bionic chip are extremely power efficient. According to the company, the in-house developed GPU found inside the A11 can deliver A10 like performance by consuming half the power.

New ISP with Improved Pixel Processor

Apple has developed a new image processor for its A11 Bionic chip. It boasts of faster low light autofocus and improved pixel processor. Moreover, it comes with a hardware level multiband noise reduction. This means that you can now take better image under low lighting condition with the new Apple A11 Bionic chip inside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

Supports 4K Recording at 60fps

The new ISP paves the way for improved video recording capabilities. The dual 12MP cameras on the iPhone 8 can shoot 4K videos at a whopping 60fps. This is by far the best video recording capability found in any smartphone yet. And it’s all due to real time image and motion analysis along with an improved video encoder. The faster chip also calls for an improved slo-mo mode. The new iPhones can now record 1080p slo-mo video at 240fps!

Bionic Neural Engine Chip

Apple has included a new A11 Bionic neural engine in its latest iPhone X smartphone. It comes in a dual core design and is capable of performing 600 billion operations per second for real-time processing. Besides, the neural engine function as the brain behind Apple’s cool new features including the Face ID and Animoji. It does so by making use of specific machine learning algorithms.
