After a break, the mid-segment tablet is well and truly back. Mid-segment tablets had their day in the sun about a decade ago, but suddenly the lights went out, not just for them, but for tablets in general. For a while, no brand was really getting into the mid-segment tablet zone, apart from Apple (which kept an iPad around $300/Rs 30,000 going by some logistical miracle). That has changed in the past couple of years, with many brands dipping their toes into this tablet pool.

One of the most consistent of these has been Xiaomi, which has been steadily adding tablets to its portfolio and has focused on the mid-segment, with a number of very good offerings in the range of $150/Rs 15,000 – $300/Rs 30,000. The latest one in line is the Redmi Pad 2 Pro. It brings the classic Redmi specs and price equation to the table, and with a starting price of $279/Rs. 24,999, has the potential to make it one of the best options in the revived mid-segment.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Looks and design: It feels premium, all right!

Its price might be mid-segment, but the first thing that hit us the minute we took the Redmi Pad 2 Pro in our hands was just how premium its build felt. The tab comes with an aluminium frame and back, and a glass front. This aluminium build not only makes it light to hold for its weight but also gives it a very premium feel. Unlike most tablets that simply bring a plain back, the Pad 2 Pro has divided the back into two segments. There is a thick-ish horizontal strip that comes with a lined texture. The same strip is home to a big pill-shaped camera unit with two big circles in it on one end and the Redmi logo on the other. The camera unit has a mirror/ chrome finish, making quite a design statement. One of the circles in it bears a lens, the other a flash.

The rest of the back has a plain matte finish, which offers a very nice contrast and relief, and also balances all the design jazz in the strip with the camera unit. The matte finish also means that the back does not catch smudges or fingerprints very easily. The top of the tablet has a power/ lock button, while the base brings a Type-C port and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Both the top and the base have two speakers each. The right side has a volume rocker on the top and a SIM card slot near the base, while the left side remains bare.

The frame is aluminium with flat sides, following the current trend. The front is, of course, all about a display surrounded by bezels that would be subjected to body shaming by those who think that bezels are now supposed to be invisible. These bezels may be a little on the thicker side, but are uniform– no discrimination here. Redmi has placed the front-facing camera in landscape mode, bang in the middle of the right bezel.

redmi pad 2 pro specs

The tablet weighs 610 grams, which may seem a little on the heavy side (the iPad is about 481 grams), but it is very well distributed, making the tablet feel light for its size. As a tablet, it is definitely on the taller side – it is 279.8 mm tall (the iPad is 248. 6 mm), but is impressively slim at 7.5mm. In a welcome touch, the tablet also comes with an IP53 rating, giving it some protection from dust and splashes, while Gorilla Glass 3 keeps the front safe. The Redmi Pad 2 Pro comes in two colors – Graphite grey and Quick silver. We got the Quick Sliver, and while both are pretty subtle colors, the darker grey is likely to blend more easily with an office setup, while the silver one is likely to get more attention.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Hardware and Specs: Impressive for its price

The Redmi Pad 2 Pro has an impressive spec sheet for its price. One of its biggest USPs is its big 12.1-inch IPS LCD display with a 2.5K resolution of 2560 x 1600, 120 Hz refresh rate, and 500 nits of brightness, as well as Dolby Vision support. However, Redmi has used a 10-bit panel on the tablet instead of a 12-bit one, which was present on its predecessor. The absence of HDR10 support is also a bit of a letdown, especially in this price range, and means one cannot stream HDR content from OTT platforms.

redmi pad 2 pro performance

It is marketed as the “fastest” Redmi Pad yet, which is true given it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor. This is paired with 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB and 256 GB storage options. Storage can be expanded up to 2 TB with the use of a dedicated microSD card slot. While the RAM is LPDDR4X and storage is UFS 2.2, neither of which is the fastest, we do not think either is a deal breaker at this price point.

There are two 8 megapixel cameras on the tablet– one on the front, another on the back. The four speakers come with support for Dolby Atmos, and wired earphone lovers will be delighted at the presence of a 3.5 mm audio jack. Another massive USP of the Redmi Pad 2 Pro is the size of its battery. It comes with a massive 12,000 mAh battery, with not just 33 W charging support, but also 27 W Type-C to Type-C reverse charging as well. The tablet also comes with both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity options, which is a feature even some premium tablets lack. However, it runs on Android 15 out of the box with Xiaomi’s Hyper OS 2 on top, both of which are old versions. Just like its predecessor, the Redmi Pad 2 Pro comes with its own Redmi Smart Pen and Redmi Pad 2 Pro Keyboard, both of which improve its productivity potential exponentially, although they have to be purchased separately.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Performance: Handles everyday tasks with ease

redmi pad 2 pro uses
It may be the “fastest Redmi Pad yet,” but the Pad 2 Pro is still very much a mid-segment tablet. It comes with a decent mid-range processor, which is great for everyday use. The Pad 2 Pro’s display also makes it a great device for reading documents, viewing content, or even scribbling and sketching. It is also big enough to use the split screen feature without two apps feeling uncomfortably cramped on the display. The display is bright, the colors are punchy, and the high refresh rate makes speedy scrolling a pleasurable experience (one can customise the refresh rate and set it to 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz, or keep it set to auto). Combine this big display with stereo speakers (quad speakers) with Dolby Atmos support, and we had a multimedia powerhouse – a tablet which is a great device to watch videos, stream content, and binge-watch sessions

From multi-tasking to Web browsing, to watching videos, to social media doomscrolls, the Redmi Pad 2 Pro handled them all with ease. We often used to split the screen or have multiple windows floating on the screen, using whichever one we wanted easily. This also allowed us to watch videos in small floating windows while working, or (more often) the other way around, without any lag. We were able to swiftly move from one app to another. The tablet performed well in casual games territory, too, and we were also able to edit images and small videos. That said, the tablet is not really built for anything heavy-duty. Try playing a resource-hungry game or editing a long video, and signs of struggle appear.

redmi pad 2 pro software

The software on the Redmi Pad 2 Pro is on the older side, HyperOS 2 on top of Android 15, but the experience is quite seamless and smooth. The UI comes with a number of third-party apps preinstalled, but thankfully, they are all grouped, which gives the tablet a very clean look and can be uninstalled if needed. Multitasking is where the software really shines. Small pop-up windows and a split-screen feature change the tablet into a functional powerhouse. HyperOS is one of the better Android skins out there, and Xiaomi has optimised it very well for tablets. It also offers deeper integration between the tablet and select Xiaomi phones, allowing users to completely mirror phones on the tablet, and also copy and paste and drop content from one device to another with ease. There are sprinkles of AI all over the UI, too – the tablet comes with Gemini integration and features like Circle to Search. The presence of older Android is a bit of a letdown, but Redmi promises five years of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, which is quite impressive, especially in tablet land.

The cameras on the tablet are good for tasks like scanning, video calls, and odd photographs here or there, which is the norm with tablets, given these are not devices meant for the photography-first mindset. 5G connectivity worked well using the SIM card option.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Stylus and Keyboard Accessories: Takes it from tablet land and makes it a productivity pro

redmi pad 2 pro accessories
What takes the Redmi Pad 2 Pro from the tablet zone and puts it very comfortably in the notebook zone are its accessories. Redmi has put together a keyboard case, the Redmi Pad 2 Pro Keyboard, and a stylus, the Redmi Smart Pen, specially for the Pad 2 Pro, just like it had for the original Pad Pro. Both accessories connect wirelessly to the tablet via Bluetooth, but need to be charged wirelessly using the Type-C ports on them.

The Redmi Pad 2 Pro Keyboard is actually pretty impressive and can morph the tablet into a notebook-ish device, making even long-form writing tasks quite an easy feat. The keys are slightly smaller than an average laptop keyboard’s, but have good spacing and nice travel as well. The keyboard also doubles up as a case, which turns the display off when it gets covered, and remains attached firmly to the tablet thanks to built-in magnets in the keyboard cover. It still lacks the stability that a laptop keyboard offers, which means you will have to keep it on a flat surface to be able to use it, but that is a compromise one faces with most tablet keyboard covers. The Smart Pen stylus is also quite impressive in its performance. It is smooth, with no lags, and picks up handwriting too. It comes with shortcut buttons, which also work very well.

The best part is the pricing of these productivity accessories – the Redmi Pad 2 Pro Keyboard and the Redmi Smart Pen are priced at Rs 3,999 each. That is super affordable for very well-designed and effective add-ons.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Battery and charging: Goes on and on and on… and then some

redmi pad 2 pro battery
The Redmi Pad 2 Pro houses a massive 12,000 mAh battery inside its slim frame. This keeps the tablet going for what seems like forever. Binge watch sessions, going down rabbit holes on the Internet for hours, writing, scribbling, sketching, note-taking, the tablet would easily go through it all for hours without giving us even a hint of battery anxiety.

If used carefully enough, it can offer nearly 20 hours of screen time, which is quite impressive. The tablet is paired with a 33W charger and takes a little over two hours to go all the way from nil to full, which is pretty impressive when one considers the size of the battery, although some might have expected faster charging speeds. And well, the 27 W Type C to Type C reverse charging makes it double up as a fairly quick charging and handy power bank. Even if you use the tablet for the entire day, it is a fair chance that you will have enough juice to juice up a smartphone by 30-50 percent, which is more than enough for most of us.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro pricing: Resisting the rising prices trend (especially in accessories)

redmi pad 2 pro price
The Redmi Pad 2 Pro is available in the following RAM and storage and connectivity variants at these prices:

  • 8 GB/ 128 GB (Wi-Fi): Rs 24,999
  • 8 GB/ 128 GB (5G): Rs 27,999
  • 8 GB/ 256 GB (5G): Rs 29,999

The Redmi Smart Pen is available at Rs 3,999, and the Redmi Pad 2 Pro Keyboard is priced at Rs 3,999 too. Given the current trend of increased prices, we think these are extremely competitive and, while slightly higher than those of the Pad Pro, do not go too far – the Redmi Pad Pro had started at Rs 21,999 for a 6 GB/ 128 GB variant and its top 8 GB/ 256 GB variant was priced at Rs 26,999. What we love most is that we can get the tablet, a stylus, and a keyboard for a little more than Rs 30,000.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Challengers: A Never Settler, A Realme, and a Paddy Bro!

redmi pad 2 pro alternatives
OnePlus Pad Go 2: Chipping away
Rs. 26,999 onwards
The tablet comes with a similarly sized display but has a more powerful MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Ultra processor and a very good stylus. The absence of a keyboard cover keeps it out of notebookland, though.

Realme Pad 3: A Real (me) rival
Rs. 26,999 onwards
Although it has a smaller 11.61-inch display, it comes with a more powerful MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Max processor and a big 12,200 mAh battery with faster 45 W charging support. It too has a very good stylus, but no official keyboard cover.

Xiaomi Pad 7: Last year’s premium bro
(Rs. 27,999)
2025’s flagship tablet from Xiaomi remains a very good proposition for those wanting a classy design, with very good keyboard and stylus accessories. No 5G support, though, and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip might seem a little old to some.

Redmi Pad 2 Pro Review Verdict: A Redmi device through and through

redmi pad 2 pro review verdict
The Redmi Pad 2 Pro is a classic Redmi device. The tablet has a beautiful display, impressive audio, terrific battery life, and a processor that can easily handle your everyday tablet tasks. Combine this with those handy accessories (sold separately) that make the tablet a productivity master, and you end up with a very good tablet that can easily slip into the shoes of a notebook (and a power bank, too). All of which makes it the mid-segment tablet we have been waiting for.

There are, of course, alternatives out there, but none of them have the versatility of the Redmi Pad 2 Pro. It is reliable, it is competitive, and it is affordable. Does it get any more Redmi than this?
